And Then There’s Snow.

Still riding high on that nice weather, even though the weather app on my phone is threatening snow!

I fit in a bike ride on Wednesday afternoon and felt warm in only a sweatshirt! I’m still getting back into riding an actual bike, much of my experience in recent years has been spinning. Cycling outside makes me nervous, so I stick to side streets and bike paths for now at least! And yes, I will always wear a helmet.

Wednesday’s breakfast was an impressive omelette consisting of an egg, two egg whites, baby spinach, red bell pepper, tomatoes, and feta. I enjoyed it with whole wheat toast.

For lunch, I had visions of crafting a beautiful salad, but was starving by the time I got home and had leftover chicken broccoli ziti (with a piece of leftover salmon instead).

Dinner was chicken with spinach rice and a big spinach salad.

I’m trying to be more creative with my cooking, especially as I’m back to blogging.

Stay warm, everyone. Tomorrow’s Friday!

Go Ahead And Ask Me How The Red Sox Did

Really baseball? I was so excited about the start of the season, in yesterday’s post I wrote, “At least I have baseball,” and what happened? Baseball was cancelled! It wasn’t that Monday was a bad day so much as it was an off one for me. Weird, not terrible but not great things happened and I was in a bit of a funk, which I think is to be expected. The snow certainly didn’t help, nor did the POSTPONEMENT of the baseball season thanks to a bit of cold (it could have been freezing, I don’t even know).

I at least did get a good amount of writing in during the day, which rarely happens. I just have to be consistent with it. Once I trekked through the snow to the gym, I fit in a killer tricep, chest, core workout before work. Always helps to get a sweat on.

Anyways, today is a new day and I’m bursting out of my funk! Here’s a food pic!

This lovely revelation was last night’s dinner, consisting of pulled pork, brown rice, zucchini, peppers, and spinach. Delicious!

Here, have another! This morning’s breakfast was a heaping bowl of warm oats to fuel me through my early morning run and workday.

Dare I say, Go Red Sox!? (Or is it still to chilly for the big bad boys of baseball?)

Snow In February, WHAT?!

Remember a week ago when it was in the 50s/60s, warm and sunny, and not snowing? Actually, I’m okay with snow because it’s February and I live in New England. Yes, driving in it can be scary, especially when you live on top of a few massive hills, or when you get stuck in a parking lot that hasn’t been plowed but you can’t be late for work- shout out to the plow man who guided me through that discouraging time! But then you drive around post-storm and this is what you see and you start to believe in heaven on earth:

And there’s nothing quite like being comfy and cozy and warm at home, curled up with a book or rewatching The Office, one of my brightest decisions, and watching the snow accumulate (knowing that soon you will be cold and itchy and shoveling).

Was that bitter? It sounded bitter.

After shoveling (great source of cardio and resistance training!), I headed to work. My post-work meal was dinner out with my friend Molly. I feasted on a blackened salmon salad made up of baby spinach, black beans, corn, and red pepper. Delicious! Even though it was cold and still a tad snowy, we went out for a frozen treat. I opted for the black raspberry frozen yogurt that was yummy!

On Saturday, I woke up early for work and then headed over to my aunt and uncle’s house for lunch. Like I mentioned, the ride over was amazing. My body was sore from all that shoveling and the rest of my workouts for the week, so I enjoyed my rest day and opted to stay in for the remainder of the night for a relaxing Netflix and writing evening. For dinner, I had leftover pasta, chicken meatballs, and so many delectable roasted Brussels sprouts.

Sunday morning started with some auntie and kitty time. I’m sure my sister and brother-in-law are thrilled that my mom and I stopped in to visit with Coconut, but they really have no choice. After, we headed over to the grocery store, with everyone else in the state, it seems. Yesterday, it was so beautiful out, so my mom and I took the dog out for a long walk to warm me up for my workout. My official workout consisted of strength training- biceps, back, shoulders, and core- followed up with HIIT cardio- burpees to box jumps and sprints on the bike. I’m fighting off symptoms of a cold and my chest was burning, so cardio was a little difficult.

Be on the lookout tomorrow for a new snowy day home workout that I am about to start planning! I happen to have a few exercise items at home that most people might not, but I will include some modifications that anyone can do! Just because it’s snowing and you’d rather stay under blankets, doesn’t mean you can’t get your heart rate up for anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. If you want that hot chocolate and couch time, you better earn it! Happy Monday!

Unseasonable Weather and Other Moments

Holy Monday it’s warm! My car registered 61 degrees this morning…February 1! Not only am I definitely not complaining, but I am moments away from running, hopping, skipping, and jumping my booty outside for some me time. There is no snow on the ground, no snow in the forecast (knock on wood), and it’s warm and sunny. Not too shabby for a Monday.

This weekend was busy, but uneventful. Friday was my rest day from the gym, but I was up at 4:30 AM for work, napped, went out for a pizza and salad lunch with my mom, then worked some more! That night, I went bowling and pretty much killed the first round (and lost terribly the next).

Saturday started with more work, luckily not as early. After, I fit in a pretty great workout that I wasn’t sure would happen since I was feeling tired. Strength training included biceps, back, shoulders, and core, followed up with a run on the treadmill. I hadn’t been outside in a long time, but I should have just glanced out the window and realized it would have been better to run outside. Missed opportunity!

My Sunday started with some grocery shopping and a workout I put together for my sister and me. We started on the elliptical to warm up with some cardio, then hit the weights to work our triceps, chest, legs, and core. Phew. Our post-workout meal was a late brunch we put together ourselves, including berry pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon. Yum! I also met this little dude yesterday. My new nephew, Coconut.

It took us awhile to get him to come out from under the bed, but he quickly warmed up to his Auntie. Playing with him made me miss my little guy that much more, remembering all the times we used to play and laugh with Bandit.

The other night, my mom was using my laptop to put together a PowerPoint Presentation and she happened to click a random button that popped up with a video that was apparently taken on my computer. I clicked on it, not knowing what it was, and it turned out that a few years ago, I had filmed Bandit watching cat videos to see if he had a reaction. At one point, I had reached my hand over to pet him, which he enjoyed for a few moments, before turning on me and biting my hand! It was such a typical Bandit moment and my mom and I burst out laughing (the tears are coming now thinking about it). Had I seen that two weeks ago, I would have been torn apart by grief, but as things get easier I found it was just what I needed.

Funny how life happens sometimes.

Warming Up the Winter

Right now, I’m gearing up to go out for a run because I can’t get over how mild it is. It’s not by any means warm, but for this time of year, wowsa! Anything that can take me off the treadmill and into the real world works for me.

I started my morning with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before heading off to work for some training sessions. I still get nervous in my preparation mode, but so far, I’ve been having a blast!

By the time I got home, I was starving, but in the mood for a weird combination of foods. I was craving an egg sandwich, so I popped in an english muffin and topped it with a slice of provolone, a chicken sausage, and an egg. While everything was cooking, I enjoyed a few carrots to munch on to curb my hunger. To go with my sandwich, I sautéed spinach and had a handful of tortilla chips. Weird assortment, but fulfilling.

I’ll take us back to last night’s dinner, which was blackened salmon, sweet potato fries, and a mixture of cauliflower, peppers, and brussels sprouts.

Going back even further, we can sneak a peek at yesterday’s lunch. It was a huge salad with a leftover piece of pizza topped with artichokes, mushrooms, and spinach.

My workout included circuits working the biceps, shoulders, and back. Along with the strength training, I did some core work as well as sprints on the elliptical. It’s strange because the body parts that are hurting today are the ones I worked out on Monday, legs, triceps, and chest. Although, no matter what I do, I never seem to have sore biceps. It’s weird.

Now I’m off to bundle up and enjoy a bit of sunshine!

Windy Wednesday

It’s not exactly morning, but I’m still here to offer you a blog post. And with an alliteration in the title!

Let’s start with breakfast, which consisted of a ham and cheese omelet, waffles, and berries. It was quite the meal to enjoy while the wind whipped around outside.

Speaking of weather, last night it snowed and I had quite a driving adventure on my way home from work. To reach my house, I have to go hill upon hill anyway, and everything was fine as I started out with strong momentum. Some truck thought it was a brilliant idea to stop to let another car pull out of its driveway in the middle of the hill, forcing me to stop and lose all traction. It’s a miracle I made it home as my car would not drive above 7/8 mph. Yikes. There might have been a lot of screaming involved.

Anyways, lunch was a quick quesadilla with cheese and leftover ground turkey from last night’s dinner. For a punch of veggies, I sautéed some spinach and paired it with some leftover broccoli.

Today was my rest day from exercise, but I did take my dog out for a quick, windy, and cold walk. Seriously, the wind. It’s trash day and there is trash lining the road thanks to the wind’s power. I had to drag the Christmas tree back to the curb after it blew across the driveway.

Winter is here.

French Toast On A Cold Winter’s Day

Hi! It seems like we ended the weekend and just side-stepped Monday. At least, to me, Monday flew by, which is why we didn’t find a new blog post yesterday. The highlight of yesterday was my getting a new winter’s jacket because my old one met its demise in a washer with a pen. It was a white coat. I don’t think I’ll be washing my new one.

Here’s how I started my Tuesday morning. Scrambled eggs, French toast, and berries.

Sometimes, you just need to spice up that toast.

Yesterday’s workout consisted of strength training.  I did a lot of cardio on Sunday with a run, so I hit my triceps, chest, legs, and core. Part of it was done with a friend from work, which makes it more fun! For the first time, I did some work on the TRX bands, so that’s something I want to look into more.

Now onto the day’s most surprising moment: I finished a book!

It seems like it’s been forever since I’ve read something other than a textbook (all with good purpose), so it was a little strange (and delightful) to jump back into the world of fiction. I love that I can connect to the library on my iPad and I spent some quality time a few days ago just browsing all the titles available. Many of the books I wanted to read needed to be put on hold and I’m just hoping they don’t all come at once.

First to pop up was Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You. Going into it, I didn’t know much about it other than that it was “sad.” While I thought the premise had its tragic moments, I think it delved into some important political issues that people don’t want to talk about. I really can’t dive in too deep so as not to spoil, so I will just recommend that you read it yourself. You will feel sad, but also inspired.

And also, apparently, I have stellar timing because the movie version is coming out in March. Go me!
