At least you’re not the Yankees today…

Welcome back from the weekend, we’ve survived another hot one.

My Friday started, as it usually does, nice and early thanks to a 4:30am wake-up call. This also means my weekend kicks off early, so I can’t complain. After work and a solid strength training workout, I lounged around the house for a bit before it was Red Sox v. Yankees time. I almost feel bad for the Yankees, but not quite.

I headed into the game with a friend who happens to be a Yankees fan. I did feel bad for her team of losers and made sure to sing along to Sweet Caroline nice and loud for her.

In college, I was so used to walking to and from the game from just down the street and afterwards, driving into the city, that taking the subway was an adventure. A very hot, sticky, and crowded adventure.

On Saturday, I had a leisurely morning, sleeping in and enjoying breakfast.

My niece and sister came over for the day and we had a great time just watching this little face.

It’s crazy how fast they grow!

I went to bed early for a Saturday night and was up early on Sunday morning to fit in a run before my hair appointment. It was warm, but dry outside and I cruised for a solid 4 miles of running. Felt strong!

After grocery shopping and touching up my roots, it was meal prep time. I chopped up a ton of veggies for salads and made my breakfast for today.

I started watching Sharp Objects on HBO, so far so good.

How’s your Monday treating you?

A Day of Meals

The selected meals this week are from various days, depending on when I remembered to take photos. Bare with me, it’s a vacation week.

Breakfast

Breakfast on vacation just tastes better. Scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. Simple and delicious.

Side note: you might not be able to tell, but I’ve been practicing my coding on the blog and so far, I’m learning a lot! I’m still on the basics and will be for awhile, but it’s been a fun experience thus far!

daily living

My typical Monday post is a recap of the weekend, but I don’t often post anything regarding the rest of the week except for food and exercise. Now that I’m back to personal training, my day is more chaotic, in a good way.

On Monday, I had one client, so I had a leisurely breakfast in the morning of my favorite pancakes before heading to the gym to train. After, I fit in my own workout. By the time I got back home, it was time for a lunch of leftovers. I’m still getting used to my sporadic routine and I have a hard time enjoying leisure time for myself when it’s in the middle of the day, but I did watch an episode of The West Wing and do some reading, while also spending ample time with Simba, who wanted my full attention.

Then it was back to the gym to work a shift at the front desk. By the time I got home, I was ready for dinner and bed.

Tuesday was a different day than normal as I had to drive into the city for a training opportunity. We finished after lunch time, so I fit in a quick workout of all the exercises that required equipment before driving home to check in on the kitten, finish up some body weight training, then head out on a run. I spent the rest of the afternoon reading and writing then had a client after dinner. Pretty much by the time I got home, I was ready for bed because Wednesdays are one of my 5am call times!

The hardest part of waking up early for me are the few moments after the alarm went off and now not wanting to leave a cuddly kitten behind, particularly when he’s meowing at me because he wants to be patted.

IMG_2161.JPG

Duty calls though, so I grabbed all my stuff I had organized the night before and got to work. After finishing up with my clients, I fit in my own workout of strength training and a session on the elliptical before heading home for lunch! Leftovers are my favorite lunch because it requires minimal preparation, especially when you’re already hungry! I typed up this post, among other little chores around the house, then headed back to work to train.

It can feel hectic sometimes, but I’m happy to be back and doing what I think I was meant to do! Am I sorry most of my pictures lately are of my kitten? No, I am not.

We’re more than halfway through the week!

food is food and food is good

It’s weird, right? That food doesn’t rhyme with good. When people ask me how I became a decent writer, I don’t tell them it’s because I know good grammar. But that is totally off topic because it’s Friday and it’s time to show you my art collection. And by art collection, I mean all the food I’ve eaten this past week. It’s colorful thanks to all the fruits and veggies I eat.

Warm bowl of oats.

The results of a soon-to-be-shared recipe.

Cod with broccoli and orzo.

French toast with an egg and fruit.

Salmon with rice and spinach.

A burger out.

a week in review

This past week, I started a new job, which I’m using as my excuse for not having blogged. In recap, I went to a book signing to pick up Sarah Michelle Gellar’s cookbook and kind of met her. I say kind of because I was flustered, had no idea what to say, and freaked out a little. It’s unnatural to meet a celebrity who means a lot to you, particularly for playing my favorite character of anything ever, Buffy, and them having no idea who you are. What do you even say? She was very nice, but my instinct was to push my friend Brad out of my picture, so I can’t really say the same about myself. We’re calling it my Selina Meyer moment. If you know me, feel free to text and ask to see the picture of me pushing him because it PLAYS OUT THE ENTIRE THING. #embarrassed.

Friday was momentous because it was a day off. I took advantage by eating a great breakfast, fitting in a solid workout, grocery shopping for the week, and then watching the entire new season of Grace and Frankie. Jane Fonda + Lily Tomlin = epic. But maybe I should have done more with my life.

On Saturday, I was up early to go to Six Flags with my friend Brad (it’s a wonder that he still wanted to hang out with me). I like to think of myself a roller coaster connoisseur, but the first ride we went on, which spins you 360 while hurtling head first down a bunch of drops, made me rethink my entire life. The thing about Six Flags is that they have cool rides, but the longest lines and terrible guest service. I’m a Disney girl to my core, so I guess ambiance is more important to me than I thought. We were there from open to close, 11 hours, and only got on six rides.

Sunday, I enjoyed an Easter meal with my cousins Meghan and Sebastian. It was a hard decision between sweet and savory, and then pancakes and french toast, but ultimately it was the french toast that won out. It was delicious!

IMG_0960.JPG

But I felt very full.

IMG_0967.JPG

There must be something to that carbo-loading theory though because once I digested and hydrated enough, I had a wonderful, strong run. Maybe it was the sun.

IMG_0966.JPG

It was a productive afternoon of meal planning, exercise planning, cleaning, and online shopping. I needed new sneakers, both for work and for play (running and general living).

IMG_0965.JPG

So far, I’ve been successful with my morning workouts. I love the feeling of having finished my workout.

Now onto Tuesday!

sunset in stages

I don’t think I can effectively speak to how beautiful California is. I am constantly amazed by the sights and wonders of this state and I know I’ve only ever seen a small part of it. To cap off my weekend, I went to Griffith Observatory to catch the sunset. Every night should end like this:

Magnificent.

This weekend was the perfect amount of relaxing and active with as much time spent outside as I possibly could get. This weather is the kind I expected when I moved out here.

Sights like these make Monday’s arrival just a little sweeter.

Just Like Riding A Bike

Happiest of Mondays!

I now understand the phrase, “like riding a bike” because I bought myself a bike and it’s nothing at all like the ones I use in spin class. Yes, I know how to ride a bike, but once we moved to our new-old house, there will hills and the bike riding stopped. I’ve been wanting to buy one for a long time and my change of scenery seemed to prompt an excellent time. Turns out, in SoCal, riding a bike is kind of a thing, and I’m taking a brief respite from my incessant researching to blog. So, you’re welcome.

This is Isobel. I have no idea why that’s her name, but she’s pink and it came to mind and I’m going with it.

IMG_5836.JPG

It took me a long time and the kindness of strangers to fit her into my car, and even then I was driving with the back windows down and the handlebars sticking out, but thankfully, I live close to the store.

Once I got settled, it was time for my first ride…to get tacos. I was hungry considering I had also just hiked and there was a taco place down the street, not quite convenient to walk to and I didn’t feel like driving, so now I have the perfect compromise!

Tacos!

IMG_5835.JPG

After my meal, I hopped back on and took the bike for a real ride. Like I mentioned, LA loves bicycles, so there are plenty of paths in which to take advantage, all year round, and one of them happens to be by my place. I did fall once thanks to a shifty sidewalk, but wasn’t hurt. I won’t be drifting into traffic anytime soon, but I’m so excited for all the traveling I’ll get to do outside of a car. Especially next weekend, which I won’t spoil.

My Sunday also consisted of a beautiful hike right by my apartment.

IMG_5832.JPG

It’s October. Friendly reminder. While everyone at home is soaking up the chill and the fall (tears!), I get this. This photo op will come in much handier once winter hits.

IMG_5833.JPG

What’s that say in the background? I think ‘Hollywood’ or something.

IMG_5834.JPG

I trekked up and down the trail once and then decided to fit in even more of a workout by climbing these stairs. I’m a short girl with stubby legs, so these stairs were not friendly or easy, and I was out of breath after reaching the top, but what a great workout! The hike, combined with my bike ride and leg-day on Saturday, makes for very tired Caitlin-legs.

Sunday morning breakfast:

IMG_5830.JPG

My dad’s birthday was on Saturday and though I wasn’t there to celebrate with him, I know he had a great day filled with love and celebration. Happy birthday, dad!

Saturday consisted of a restful morning of sleeping in before meeting my cousins for brunch. It was so nice to see and spend time with family, especially while sitting outside on a spectacular sunshiny day and eating a gourmet meal. I opted for french toast made of croissants (yeah, worth the indulgence) which came in sandwich form with eggs and bacon, but I ate it separately and miss it now that it’s gone.

At the gym, it was leg-day, which meant lots of lower body exercises that my body does not love. I don’t know if it’s that I’ve been running more on a treadmill, but my knees have been cracking with squats and lunges. They don’t hurt necessarily, but I’m being cautious. The workout consisted of squats, deadlifts, lunges, step ups, kettlebell swings, plie squats, lateral leg lifts, elevated bridges, mountain climbers, and plank jacks. Phew. Four sets of twelve on each, and yeah, I was shaky after. With some core- leg lifts, flutter kicks, bicycle crunches, and side plank dips, and a sweaty mile on the treadmill, I was finito!

On Saturday night, I forced myself out of my comfort zone by joining a Meetup.com social group. This one played board games at a bar. It’s always hard for me to make small talk, but I know that part of moving to a new place is being uncomfortable in a lot of situations (not a bad thing, just a thing), which also means putting myself out there and taking risks. I did have fun, although Cards Against Humanity is much more fun with the idiots you know and Jenga is nerve-wracking, although maybe that’s just my competitive streak showing. After a quick stop at another bar with dancing proved to be a little bit too much for this extroverted introvert, I headed home and ended up making friends with my Lyft driver who is also a writer.

To take it back to Friday was a much-needed, much-appreciated, and much-deserved night of indulgence and rest. For the record, I think I deserve to burn 500x more than the calories I actually burned for showing up to the gym on a Friday night after work. To run. On a treadmill. You better believe I savored my pizza and ice cream and TV catch-up after that! I love Friday nights so much and I also love to do nothing on Friday nights. It’s rare that you’ll get me out for more than a dinner and a movie, especially now that I’m back into regular work hours. I love the idea of Friday and the freedom it provides to just veg, as well as the ability to sleep to my heart’s content on Saturday morning!

So we took a little backwards tour of my weekend, one that was both relaxing and adventurous! I’m rested and ready for the work week and can’t wait to get out cycling and hiking some more!

Have a wondrous week!
