Perfect Summer Weekend

Hi! I hope the weekend was glorious! We had great weather all the way through, even though rain was threatening on Saturday.

After work on Friday, I fit in a sweaty total body workout with a little dose of cardio at the end. When I got home, my sister and her family came over to hang outside and I got some quality auntie time.

IMG_4795

I was woken early and abruptly on Saturday by a cat who was ready to seize the day, but once I set him loose, I fell back asleep until almost 10am. I guess I needed my rest!

When I was up for good, I started the day with two poached eggs on a whole wheat toast and a big bowl of watermelon.

IMG_4846

As I digested and hydrated, I watched an episode of Safe on Netflix. I started it on Thursday and was dismayed that I only had time to watch one episode. I was hooked from the start!

I tore myself away from the screen long enough to crush a 3.1 mile run. It was super hot, but my usual trail is shadowy and there was a nice breeze to guide me through. My legs felt strong!

IMG_4849

Upon my arrival home, I jumped in the pool to cool down- much needed- and dived into this Greek salad with chicken. Perfect fuel to re-energize. It looks a little bland because of the blanket of dressing, but I promise there was a load of veggies underneath, including baby spinach, bell peppers, carrots, cucumber, and tomato!

IMG_4851

My mom and I went grocery shopping in the afternoon to prepare for the week- lots of healthy choices! On Weight Watchers, it’s good to mix things up so we don’t get sick of certain foods and turn to less than great options.

I settled down to finish Safe- there were only eight episodes- and was sad, but satisfied when it ended. I sort of predicted the ending by the penultimate episode, but I wasn’t disappointed.

For dinner, I grilled up some shrimp in blackening seasoning, lime juice, teriyaki sauce, and sriracha and they were so good! I threw them atop two corn tortillas with bell peppers, broccoli slaw, and a dollop of sour cream mixed with the same ingredients as the shrimp. Note to remind myself to do this more often, maybe with Greek yogurt! Such a little detail added so much flavor to my meal! I also had a few chips to round out my meal.

IMG_4852

I assume this meal would pair well with cold beer or a tequila beverage of some sort, but I was saving my extra calories for some Saturday night ice cream! What can I say, your girl’s got a sweet tooth.

The rest of the night, I watched the Red Sox and played hard with my main dude. He’s been very busy lately and is constantly on the prowl. Of course, I mean the Sim-dude.

On Sunday, I was up early to hit the beach! We got breakfast to start off the day. Two eggs over easy with whole wheat toast and a big bowl of fruit. My mom shared a slice of bacon with me too.

IMG_4854

My favorite part about the beach is going in the water. It was chilly, but the waves enticing, and we stayed in for quite awhile twice.

IMG_4855

I think that’s actually a person’s Shoulder and not my thumb. And no visit to the beach is complete without some ice cream. It’s all part of healthy living!

lately

TV: Cheers- I’ve finally admitted this is a thing I’m doing, rather than putting an episode on intermittently between shows…after five seasons.

Books: I’ve been reading quite a bit lately- I’m aiming for one a week- and right now I’m on the new-ish Tana French novel, The Trespasser

Music: Hamilton- it’s been over a year now and I still adore it

Food: french toast has been making more of an appearance in breakfast, as you’ll have seen in yesterday’s post- I’m still learning how to make it crispy rather than soggy in the middle; I’ve also been trying to be more experimental

Exercise: I’m calling it the Wonder Woman workout because I took a collection of exercises Gal Gadot did to train for the film, as well as my own stuff, and it’s crushing

Hobbies: the usual reading and writing; but also drinking a GALLON of water a day to try and make me feel better- I’m on day six of my goal for a month and so far it hasn’t been too hard

Things I’m Looking Forward To: weekends in LA and of course, still Disney

Just Like Riding A Bike

Happiest of Mondays!

I now understand the phrase, “like riding a bike” because I bought myself a bike and it’s nothing at all like the ones I use in spin class. Yes, I know how to ride a bike, but once we moved to our new-old house, there will hills and the bike riding stopped. I’ve been wanting to buy one for a long time and my change of scenery seemed to prompt an excellent time. Turns out, in SoCal, riding a bike is kind of a thing, and I’m taking a brief respite from my incessant researching to blog. So, you’re welcome.

This is Isobel. I have no idea why that’s her name, but she’s pink and it came to mind and I’m going with it.

IMG_5836.JPG

It took me a long time and the kindness of strangers to fit her into my car, and even then I was driving with the back windows down and the handlebars sticking out, but thankfully, I live close to the store.

Once I got settled, it was time for my first ride…to get tacos. I was hungry considering I had also just hiked and there was a taco place down the street, not quite convenient to walk to and I didn’t feel like driving, so now I have the perfect compromise!

Tacos!

IMG_5835.JPG

After my meal, I hopped back on and took the bike for a real ride. Like I mentioned, LA loves bicycles, so there are plenty of paths in which to take advantage, all year round, and one of them happens to be by my place. I did fall once thanks to a shifty sidewalk, but wasn’t hurt. I won’t be drifting into traffic anytime soon, but I’m so excited for all the traveling I’ll get to do outside of a car. Especially next weekend, which I won’t spoil.

My Sunday also consisted of a beautiful hike right by my apartment.

IMG_5832.JPG

It’s October. Friendly reminder. While everyone at home is soaking up the chill and the fall (tears!), I get this. This photo op will come in much handier once winter hits.

IMG_5833.JPG

What’s that say in the background? I think ‘Hollywood’ or something.

IMG_5834.JPG

I trekked up and down the trail once and then decided to fit in even more of a workout by climbing these stairs. I’m a short girl with stubby legs, so these stairs were not friendly or easy, and I was out of breath after reaching the top, but what a great workout! The hike, combined with my bike ride and leg-day on Saturday, makes for very tired Caitlin-legs.

Sunday morning breakfast:

IMG_5830.JPG

My dad’s birthday was on Saturday and though I wasn’t there to celebrate with him, I know he had a great day filled with love and celebration. Happy birthday, dad!

Saturday consisted of a restful morning of sleeping in before meeting my cousins for brunch. It was so nice to see and spend time with family, especially while sitting outside on a spectacular sunshiny day and eating a gourmet meal. I opted for french toast made of croissants (yeah, worth the indulgence) which came in sandwich form with eggs and bacon, but I ate it separately and miss it now that it’s gone.

At the gym, it was leg-day, which meant lots of lower body exercises that my body does not love. I don’t know if it’s that I’ve been running more on a treadmill, but my knees have been cracking with squats and lunges. They don’t hurt necessarily, but I’m being cautious. The workout consisted of squats, deadlifts, lunges, step ups, kettlebell swings, plie squats, lateral leg lifts, elevated bridges, mountain climbers, and plank jacks. Phew. Four sets of twelve on each, and yeah, I was shaky after. With some core- leg lifts, flutter kicks, bicycle crunches, and side plank dips, and a sweaty mile on the treadmill, I was finito!

On Saturday night, I forced myself out of my comfort zone by joining a Meetup.com social group. This one played board games at a bar. It’s always hard for me to make small talk, but I know that part of moving to a new place is being uncomfortable in a lot of situations (not a bad thing, just a thing), which also means putting myself out there and taking risks. I did have fun, although Cards Against Humanity is much more fun with the idiots you know and Jenga is nerve-wracking, although maybe that’s just my competitive streak showing. After a quick stop at another bar with dancing proved to be a little bit too much for this extroverted introvert, I headed home and ended up making friends with my Lyft driver who is also a writer.

To take it back to Friday was a much-needed, much-appreciated, and much-deserved night of indulgence and rest. For the record, I think I deserve to burn 500x more than the calories I actually burned for showing up to the gym on a Friday night after work. To run. On a treadmill. You better believe I savored my pizza and ice cream and TV catch-up after that! I love Friday nights so much and I also love to do nothing on Friday nights. It’s rare that you’ll get me out for more than a dinner and a movie, especially now that I’m back into regular work hours. I love the idea of Friday and the freedom it provides to just veg, as well as the ability to sleep to my heart’s content on Saturday morning!

So we took a little backwards tour of my weekend, one that was both relaxing and adventurous! I’m rested and ready for the work week and can’t wait to get out cycling and hiking some more!

Have a wondrous week!

Extra Exciting Weekend Recap

I am posting this early because I’m so excited, but since most of my readers are on the East Coast, you’ll be in bed and won’t even notice.

Welcome to post-weekend life! As usual, the days flew by, but thankfully it was a good one.

Before I go into the mundane, I cannot start this post in any other way. Look what happened!

14560232_2719998399141_6875147708668036268_o.jpg

You guys!!! That is Sarah Michelle Gellar! Buffy is my favorite show ever and I’ve been a fan for years. She was doing an event with her company, Foodstirs (which for the record, is healthy, features all-natural ingredients, yummy, and Caitlin approved if you are so inclined). As I was waiting for this picture to happen, I kept thinking I should say something poignant, such as, “Thanks for being an inspiration and a kickass woman, both as Buffy and as a innovator of your own company,” but all I said was, “Thank you, I’m such a big fan.”

The whole thing could have gone over a lot worse, so I’ll take it. I also would have liked to imply that one day she would be starring in a show I will write and create, but I didn’t want to push it. We’ll all just have to remember this moment in a few years.

I’ve lived in LA for two and a half weeks now and in that time, I’ve got a job and met my favorite celebrity. I’m accepting these as positive omens and not just a rush job to get me out of here.

And now we’ll go back…

On Friday, I got my butt up for a workout. Shoulders, legs, and core. For whatever reason, even though my legs are obviously stronger, they do not like strength training. The poor things were not happy at 5:50 AM to endure a ton of squats and lunges back to back, but in the end, they felt stronger for it. To top things off, I cycled it out for a few minutes. After work on Friday, I met up with a friend from college for Happy Hour, something we do not have back in Boston. They had a slider with fries option which was really cute so I went with that for my dinner. Back at the apartment, I started watching Kristen Bell’s new show The Good Place, which is adorable.

Saturday morning called for pancakes.

IMG_5765.JPG

Lunch was a stir fry. I might have gone overboard on the soyaki.

IMG_5769.JPG

Dinner was pasta and salad.

IMG_5771.JPG

I don’t think I left my apartment on Saturday. I spent a lot of time watching Arrested Development, which many people have suggested I watch and I just never got around to it. Let’s back track for a moment. I’m certain I have revealed my phobia of Liza Minelli before on the blog, but if not, I’ll regal you now. For many years, that woman stalked me. I don’t mean in the literal sense in that she followed me around (that I know of!), but she’d show up in things like a Baseball Special, SNL, pictures at restaurants, and so many more references I’ve repressed. Since I saw a video of hers in high school drama class, I’ve harbored a fear, and it’s not something I’m proud of, but I’ll point out that she was at least accused of beating up her husband. Back to Saturday, I was mid-binge when this happened:

IMG_5787.PNG

Destroyed. I’ve been relieved of my Liza curse for years, but she strikes back! I must be on alert.

I was semi-productive in parts of Saturday, reading and writing and whatnot, but mostly, I was completely lazy and I have no shame in that. In my defense, it was raining and cold back in Boston, so my emotions must still be there.

On Sunday, I woke up and had a quick breakfast of eggs and toast. Then it was off to pick up my cousins to head to The Grove. I was going to try and show you my commute from this Snapchat filter the other night:

IMG_5763.PNG

But then, I was waiting for my cousins and snapped this real picture.

IMG_5776.JPG

Then at The Grove, this happened.

IMG_5785.JPG

So basically, that’s all that matters ever. Kidding. But only kind of. I will remind you of my post from the other day when I jokingly complained that instead of meeting any celebrities, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, I saw two guys joking about putting mayonnaise in their coffee. Either I’m psychic or what I put out into the universe comes true, so I’ll test that theory. I’d like a million dollars, thanks much.

After I navigated myself home, I called my friend Bethany and we talked for close to three hours, which seems insane. We didn’t even realize. I was productive throughout the chat: folding laundry, going for a run, food prepping for the week, then making and eating dinner. That’s friendship.

It was only fitting that I wear this shirt out on my run.

IMG_5786.JPG

But also impractical because cotton does not absorb sweat gracefully.

Monday comes as Monday does, so I finished up some writing, prepped my things for the day, set the alarm for 5:30 AM, and called it a day.

Two Days!

Pretty soon, I’ll be off on my adventure and I hope to share with you all as I go through it. I’m now two days out from my big adventure and there’s a million different feelings and thoughts circling my head. Change is big and scary and necessary, and not in the least easy. These past few months have been a whirlwind of preparations intermingled with the usual workdays and summer happenings. Especially in these past few days, I’ve spent a lot of time with family and friends, not exactly saying ‘goodbye’, but more ‘see you at Christmas,’ but it’s still weird.

Many people have asked me if this move is “it,” meaning I’m not coming back. I understand the sentiment, but I don’t think there’s ever a way of knowing if anything is  “it.” What I’m telling people is that I’m going on an adventure. It’s as temporary as it is permanent, which sums up everything we do in life. I’m going for a multitude of reasons, number one being that I want to write for TV. I will never feel settled in anything that I do professionally until I give this a shot. It’s my dream.

As my mom said, when I mentioned it was hard that my dreams were taking me far away: “That’s the point of dreams, you have to chase them.” People may think I have a glamorous view of moving to Hollywood and pursuing my dreams. They’re not wrong because it’s hard not to envision this complete change of life, with a lot of fear, but much more hope, thinking that things might just fall into place, but I also have no delusions that this journey will be easy. That’s what makes up a journey, struggles and triumphs. The whole “blood, sweat, and tears” trope is very real. I don’t know if I will succeed as a writer in a place where there are thousands of people doing the same exact thing, but I have to believe in myself and my talent, and give it my all. At the very worst, I will have tried, learned invaluable lessons, and lived.

I’m entirely fortunate to have the very best family and friends to support me through it.

Just A Thing

Happy mid-week! I’m only slightly ashamed to say that I’m excited that my favorite guilty pleasure TV show comes back tonight- Baby Daddy. I’ve discussed my adoration for the show before, so I won’t go into too much detail. It has a great cast (particularly Melissa Peterman from Reba), cute storylines, and isn’t terribly written (a huge plus for a sitcom like that).

I realize it has been awhile since I’ve posted some food pics so here we go! Let’s start with a black bean veggie burger two ways.

Numero Uno: A colorful and flavorful salad!

IMG_4892.JPG

Numero Dos: With rice and veggies!

IMG_4896.JPG

My favorite pancakes on a cloudy day. Oddly shaped this morning.

IMG_4899.JPG

Shoutout to my mom’s homemade chicken potpie and mashed potatoes from last night that was so delicious, I couldn’t capture its essence on camera.

As for exercise this week, I kicked things off on Monday with a strength training workout on the TRX straps. I don’t know much about TRX, but they appear to be so versatile, so one of my trainer friends helped me out a bit!

Even though I spent most of yesterday thinking it was Monday, I still had a great Tuesday workout. My strength training kicked my biceps, shoulders, back, and core before I hopped on the stairclimberI had been using that more often, then stopped, and coming back to it was whoa. Even though I’m super slow, it’s still effective.

I feel like I should have more to talk about, but this week has been moving in strange ways. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, it’s just a thing.

Workout planning time!

Humbled by Fame: A How-To Guide

Whoa. This weekend has been so much fun and it has everything to do with my mild internet fame. My mom and I want to thank everyone for reading and sharing and for the overwhelming support of my latest post, which you can read here if you have no idea what I’m talking about: http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/09/19/dear-joy-behar-a-thank-you-from-a-nurses-child/.

Nurses are awesome, especially my mom and I’m so happy that so many are agreeing!

Here’s all of the wonderful things that have happened to me since I experienced the instant rush of success:

  1. I was offered my own TV show deal
  2. Chris Evans proposed
  3. Amy Poehler and I are best friends
  4. I lost 30 pounds by increasing my daily calorie allowance
  5. I made delicious pumpkin waffles

Okay, so only one of those things happened. Any guesses as to which??

Yes! You are exactly right. We’ll be married next summer and all of you are invited!

IMG_3973

Psh, wishful thinking. Plus, that ring would have been a whole lot bigger had it been real. Reality is more like:

IMG_3971

Still pretty delicious.

This weekend was fun with or without Chris Evans. On Friday, I got my day started with a dumbbell strength workout, worked, then headed to my aunt and cousin’s nail party. I got some Jamberry’s picked out based solely on my mom’s choosing all of the holiday options they have available. They were cute though so I won’t complain.

IMG_3955

Clearly I’ve mastered the pout.

On Saturday, I worked through the morning, but ate this yummy oatmeal to fuel me through it.

IMG_3949

After helping cover up the pool for the season- it’s now fall!- I had this for lunch. I’m big on waffles and eggs these days and I don’t care for which meal I eat them!

IMG_3950

I wrote my now famous blog post, then met my friend Katie in the city. We went to a Greek festival for dinner and ate yummy gyros and baklava before meeting another friend at a Gatsby-type themed bar.

IMG_3953

Sunday morning started with some grocery shopping. My mom and I met my Aunt Stacy and cousin Erin for lunch. Blackened salmon salad for the win!

IMG_3954

After, we all scooted over for a Paint Nite afternoon. I can totally see why people love painting, and I also love to draw, but I never know what to create without someone telling and showing me how. I have a lot to work on when it comes to painting, but I don’t think it looks half bad.

IMG_3970

Glowing from our newfound fame.

IMG_3966

IMG_3968

It was so beautiful out yesterday and by the time I got home, my legs were itching for a run outside! I headed down to the track to run on a consistent flat surface and I felt s-t-r-o-n-g. The intention was to go 4 miles, but by the time I reached my third, I knew I was in a good place, so I kept pushing. By the end, I got to 6.4 miles (had I realized at that point I was .1 away from 6.5, I would have gone for it, but oh well). I think I honestly could have run longer had it not been dark out, but also my legs were chafing! I can’t wait to run with pants on instead of shorts because it soothes things so much better!

I watched bits and pieces of the Emmys. My goal is to one day host and I think I could do a better job than Andy Samberg who felt choppy. I suspect we got spoiled by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey so many times. Maybe within the next few years, I’ll be receiving an award for my own show and hosting, and you can say you knew me when!
