Total Body Crush

Workout Wednesday…on Thursday!

Because of vacation- woohoo!- I only had two workouts in the gym for this week. I did a lot of running and walking around the beach and jump roping in the backyard with my quick body strength total body workout.

Here are some shots.

Day One

Single-Arm Presses.

Single-Leg Deadlifts.

(Maybe I shouldn’t have tried to take it myself, or at least tried to get another one).

Kettlebell Swings.

I performed each move (there were a few more I didn’t include in the series) 12 reps per 3 sets. It felt great to sweat!

workout wednesday

I switch between full-body and split routines every few weeks/months to keep from plateauing and right now, I’m in the thick of full-body madness. If you’ll remember, my latest workout was inspired by Gal Gadot’s training for Wonder Woman and it has been kicking my butt in the best way.

On Mondays, I start with 30 minutes of cardio, usually on the spin bike, alternating between jumps, sprints, and hills. I follow it up with a half-hour of strength training targeting every muscle group, 2 sets of 20 reps.

Tuesdays are all about compound movements. My first circuit includes rows, deadlifts, front squats, reverse curls, and overhead presses, all with the barbell. I start with 2 sets of 5 with just the weight of the barbell all sequentially. Then, I move onto the individual movements with 4 sets of 5 because I can lift more weight with some exercises. I’ve been doing this for a few weeks now and I can already feel myself growing stronger. I end with about 10-15 pounds on the barbell and do another set of 5 in a row. My second circuit includes chest presses, assisted pull-ups, tricep dips, hanging leg raises, and oblique lean downs, same sets and reps. If I have time at the end, I try to do 8-10 minutes of jump roping.

Wednesdays are a run day, going between 3-5 miles.

For Thursdays, I fit in more cardio on the spin bike, either a straight 30 minutes or two 15-minute workouts with strength training, this time 3 sets of 12 reps.

My Friday or Saturday workout involves more circuit training, 4 exercises in 5 sets of 10. More jump roping at the end.

Either Friday or Saturday will by my rest day and then I go for another long run on Sundays.

It’s been killer, but effective!

weekend and travel plans

This weekend was one of relaxation after traveling. I did a lot of nothing, with some exercise thrown in to assuage the guilt.

I had taken a week off from working out thanks to my travel last week and it was much needed. On Saturday, I got back to it with a total body strength routine and some spinning and I was feeling those DOMS on Sunday. A run/walk combo helped stretch out my sore legs in particular, but they were still achey on Sunday night and this morning! I have a love/hate for this kind of pain, but it is the good kind of pain. I guess it was time to mix things up with my plan.

I was also able to catch up on sleep, which had gotten messed up when I took a red-eye to Boston last Friday. I don’t sleep well on planes, especially with my legs feeling a bit cramped. I had a couple of hours to nap once arriving home before my mom and I got mani/pedis for my cousin’s wedding. It was dancing time at the beautiful ceremony and reception and we were up past 2 am, which meant I was awake for the better part of 24+ hours and jet lagged. Whew. But it was well worth it.

The rest of my break was spent with my family, shopping, going to movies and dinner, and spending some quality time. It’s always hard to leave, but it was great to see everybody. Even though it’s a long flight from coast-to-coast, particularly east-to-west, it was nice to gain three hours of the day on the way back.

I captured some snapshots from the plane:

It was hard to not include the wing of the plane in my photos, so that accounts for the odd angles.

Somehow, it’s Monday again. Enjoy it!

My Left Side Is Rebelling Against Me

I just came back from my first massage in a year (almost to the day) and it made me realize how much has changed. It’s funny what triggers those thoughts! Last year, I got a massage with my mom and sister right before my sister’s wedding. I happened to be at a job that was stressful and that I didn’t love and I had to ask the massage therapist to stop touching my neck because it hurt too much from where I carried my stress.

A year later and I’m in a position I love, I know exactly the muscles that are being affected by the massage, and the tension in my body isn’t from stress, so much as physical labor. As I suspected from recent weeks, my left side has been taking a beating, from my foot to my upper trapezius muscles. No idea why the tension is primarily on one side over the other, especially considering that I’m right-handed, but it happens!

Note to self, get massages more regularly.

This is the face of a happy beach-goer.

The only decent selfie that was snapped of the four of us celebrating Katie’s birthday!

My breakfast is already anticipating the July 4th holiday, thanks to the delicious fruit!

In other news, I’ve been grinding at the gym with total body workouts, including a day of intense HIIT and plyometric strength training so as to rev up the metabolism and burn fat. I also upped my running to three times a week, altering mileage, speed, and incline to mix things up (especially if it’s raining and I’m stuck on the treadmill). I’m still going easy on the lower back exercises- deadlifts, rows, and bridges in particular- but my back isn’t quite as sore as before. In exciting personal gains, I’m getting so much better at the hanging leg raises, and my body is no longer swaying, but is stabilized by a stronger core. Practice does make better!

According to the body fat calculator at work, I’m down 3% since the last time I weighed in, around a month ago. I don’t know how accurate body fat calculators are, but it has showed similar numbers in the past, so I’ll take it!

Like most of the world, I am also obsessed with Hamilton and I’ve been listening to the Original Broadway Cast Recording on repeat all day, every day.

I’ve had to tear myself away from this new book I’m reading thanks to my mom’s recommendation. It’s called Two Truths and a Lie by Katrina Kittle and it’s fascinating. I sat down in my backyard Monday afternoon expecting to get through a chapter or two and ended up reading for the next three hours. Whoops.

It is summer, so it’s almost time for my annual Harry Potter reread! Someone didn’t believe me that there was a July 31st and the only reason I knew for a definitive fact that yes, 100% there was indeed a July 31st was because it’s Harry Potter and JK Rowling’s birthday. Let’s not eliminate such a blessed day!

Writing time! Happy Wednesday, folks!

My Omelet Flipping Skills Need Improvement

This morning, I had a vision as to what I wanted for breakfast. An omelet concocted of an egg, two egg whites, chicken sausage, chopped jalapeños, and shredded cheese. Thinking about it in bed, I could picture exactly what it should look like and once I lumbered down the stairs, I got to work!

This is a picture of a perfect omelet that I Googled.

This is a picture of my actual omelet, along with the rest of the meal.

Forgive the strange lighting of the glare from the sun. Now that I look at it, the omelet almost looks artistic with the chopped jalapeño on top. I could erase everything I’ve written above and pretend like I intended it to look that way, or I’ll just leave it and allow the truth to be revealed- I am a bad omelet flipper!

Let’s talk some workouts now. On Wednesday, it was so nice out so I went for a brisk walk before hitting up the gym for strength training. The week has continued to be total body at 3 sets of 15 reps, so it was fast-paced and tiring to build up that endurance. On Thursday, I headed out for an amazing run. The weather was perfect to run with the sun beating down, but a slight chill in the air. I love Spring (so long as my allergies hold off!)

Now I’m ready to get to the rest of my Friday. I’m going to try to be better at snapping pictures during the weekend so that my recaps aren’t entirely too wordy.

On a more serious note, today is the third anniversary of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. My thoughts are with all of the people who continue to be affected in so many ways by the events of the day. It’s times like these that we must remember to appreciate the good in what life offers, to work hard, take risks, laugh, and love. Lately, I’ve been reminded of the brevity of life, and all the joys that can be found in it, despite the sorrow of loss. Live, and live as well as you can, with whatever you’ve got.

Bacon Grease Burns Through Styrofoam

Some cosmic force in this world doesn’t want me to have my bacon and eat it too. If you cook bacon, then you know that the grease isn’t good for the inner workings of the sink, so you’re supposed to dispose of it some other way. I had been putting it in a coffee mug that is never used for coffee purposes, but it was too hard to clean and my mom bought styrofoam cups just for this occasion.

It’s been awhile since I’ve cooked bacon, but thought I’d treat myself this morning and look what happened when I tried to be good and clean.

Luckily, I got the cold water running fast and my hand is fine, but it was startling! I guess it makes a good blog story!

On another note, I got super emotional looking at the newly released Gilmore Girls’ revival pictures, so you can see I’ve got a lot going on for me right now.

Happy Monday…!

The weekend starts, as I have always assumed, on Friday. Even when you work on Friday, it just feels so much better. To start my day, I worked through a kettlebell and plyometric heavy total body workout. There’s nothing quite more refreshing than a solid, butt-kicking workout that works up all those good feelings. After work, I headed out with friends for dinner. I couldn’t stay out too late because I have an early Saturday morning shift, but it was nice to see everyone!

After work on Saturday, I wanted to nap, but I never feel particularly good enough afterwards, so instead, I headed out into the cool sunshine and had an amazing run. It felt so good to be outside under the sun, listening to music, and hitting that stride! Post-workout, I headed out to see Melissa McCarthy’s new movie The Boss. It was ridiculous, in a hilarious sort of way, and I continue to be amazed by Melissa’s fearless approach to comedy. I’m also super excited about the new Ghostbusters movie even though I’ve never seen the original! Speaking of Melissa McCarthy and Gilmore Girls, I’m so happy she’s going to make an appearance!

On Sunday, it was time for the weekly grocery shopping. I also took some time to change up my workout approach as I’ve decided to dedicate a week or two to total body workouts every day. I’m already tired! I enjoyed lunch out with my parents and grandma before heading to the gym to get started, finishing up with a few minutes on the elliptical, before working for a few hours. Sunday ended with a few chores, such as the mass amount of laundry that always seems to accumulate even though it feels like you’ve just done it!

Now time to food prep for the week, fit in a workout, catch the Sox home opener, and work! Happy Monday to you…don’t let the bacon grease get you down! Bacon grease doesn’t dictate your day.
