I’m Not Paranoid, But…

I’m not saying I’m paranoid, but if you have a Mac (or a computer in general), then you’ve probably noticed the little green light near the camera lens glow when you haven’t turned on the camera. I’d taken to ignoring it in the past, but then I was babysitting my neighbor and she had a piece of tape over hers and I had to ask about it. It’s a precaution that is unfortunate and not altogether overcautious considering this world in which we live. Regardless of whether it’s necessary, the tape that now graces my screen makes me feel just a bit better. Let’s not be creepy, people!

I’m ashamed to admit that it didn’t take long for me to forget to snap a photo of my meals before I eat. The only meal I have to show you in the past 24 hours is this one from dinner. Chicken stir fry chock full of vibrant veggies and brown rice.

It is a thing of wonder.

My workout yesterday consisted of strength training that hit my triceps, chest, and legs. Lately, I’ve been doing four exercises for each part of the body and three sets of fifteen reps each. It creates a good burn, but a burn nonetheless. Since focusing more on endurance, I’ve noticed that I’ve still been able to go up in weight, which is satisfying. After the strength portion, I focused on some core work before hopping on a bike for some Tabata sprints.

Other than exercising, writing, and working, I’ve been watching Chelsea Handler’s new docu-series on Netflix, Chelsea Does, and thus far, I’ve loved it. I’ve always found her funny- i.e. when I met her at a book signing and she signed my book “Caitlin sucks eggs, Love Chelsea.”- and I watched Chelsea Lately a ton, but this new series has a serious and poignant edge to it that raises a lot of good questions and portrays interesting perspectives to difficult or not well-known topics. I’ll go more in-depth once I finish the series, but I highly recommend it and I am looking forward to her new series debuting!

As to how I’m doing, I can admit that the pain isn’t as fresh, but I’m not healed. There’s a sorrowful glow that sits in my stomach. This morning, the blankets had bunched up around my legs and it reminded me of when he would curl up on my bed and later, I heard a noise that sounded like the thud Bandit would make when he jumped up on my desk. Then I remember what happened and it hits me all over again.

Yet, we keep on going because living our lives is a wondrous thing.

I Should Never Speak Words

If you know me, you know I have a thing with words. With all humility I can muster, I am not terrible at writing, in fact, I think it’s one of my strongest attributes. Not to say that I have an overwhelming vocabulary, but I think I can string a few nice lines together. Verbally, not so much.

I should probably just not be allowed to speak. Too many words have I butchered the pronunciation without even realizing, until of course someone shouts it in my face. Paradigm, satiety, and traipsing to name some of the more recent words. Phrases are also something I should very much stay away from and not just because they’re cliche.

For example, when my mom asked me how my car was driving after it’s surgery (new battery), I told her it “was smooth as a sailor.” She kept talking past it so I thought I had gotten away with my mistake, but she made a point to mention that was not the correct statement near the end of conversation. It’s smooth as…well, actually, I can’t remember. The sea, maybe? In which case, I was close.

Perhaps the worst of all was when I explained to a friend how some guy gave me attitude. The expression is “gave me lip,” but I said “gave me tongue,” which is just completely wrong to say out loud to someone. He was very calm in correcting me, but I still had to slap face to palm. Or is it palm to face? I DON’T KNOW!

My sister says my struggle is because I am a strong and frequent reader. I must pick up my vocabulary from reading, which means I wouldn’t necessarily hear the words. I am also a champion speller, which backs up the reading theory.

What I think she’s trying to say is that I’m a genius and I overwhelm everyone with my unique ability to bypass every rule in the English language and just go with what sounds right in my own damn brain.

Point 1: Caitlin. Point 0: World.

Let’s see, for food, the past few days. Breakfast yesterday was peanut butter pancakes, lunch was a cheese, spinach, and red pepper quesadilla, and dinner was turkey tacos.

Yesterday was my rest day from official exercise, but I did go for a refreshing, brisk walk around my neighborhood.

Today, I had a piece of wheat toast with a smear of peanut butter and half a banana before my workout. Post-workout, I had a cup of Greek yogurt with blueberries and granola. Lunch was out with my mom and it was a Greek salad with toasted ravioli. Yum!

I killed it at the gym this morning. I started off with an awesome Spin class that wrecked my legs (in a good way) and finished off with a few strength circuits. First, I mixed up triceps and chest exercises and followed it up with leg and core workouts.

Some shopping, dining, and studying followed.

Happy Friday, people! Hug your loved ones a little harder, live your lives a little brighter, be kind, forgive, and relax.

#CarTroubles

Yeah, I just hash-tagged in my title. It’s what the cool kids do, which I’m clearly not. As you can probably guess, I am, however, having some car troubles. It appears the issue is my battery, which is in the process of being fixed. That’s fine now, but when I was trying to pick up my neighbor from school yesterday, it would have been nice if the car would start. Or, you know, when it seemed to be fixed and I was trying to get to work and it stopped again. That was a fun little moment of panic.

We’re moving forwards, or well, backwards since we’re talking about yesterday’s meals now…

For lunch, I had more chickpea curry. I was very cautious to snap a better picture this time so you could see what the fuss was about. Yum!

IMG_4408.JPG

Grilled salmon, brown rice, spinach, and squash was just what I needed on a cold, rainy evening. I drizzled some honey barbecue mustard on top for a boost of flavor.

IMG_4409.JPG

Breakfast came in two parts, thanks to the aforementioned car troubles and having to be up super early to get my mom to work, so I could use her car. Part one: egg, ham, and cheese on an english muffin with more sweet berries!

IMG_4410.JPG

Part two post-workout: granola-topped Greek yogurt and a banana.

IMG_4411.JPG

While writing this, I enjoyed another lunch of chickpea curry, this time with some leftover rice and half a piece of naan. I stirred it up a bit before taking the picture so you could see all the colors and flavors of the dish. I also ended up steaming so extra spinach to add some extra nutrients.

IMG_4412.JPG

Onto workouts! I’m nursing some sore gluteus maximus muscles today thanks to a killer legs/butt circuit yesterday. I also worked my biceps, chest, and core which were great, but my leg workout was intense. I superset the squat press with split squats and followed it up with a superset of the leg press and jumping lunges. The split squats and jumping lunges are probably the culprit of said sore muscles. Whew!

Back at it again this morning- I love morning workouts when I can get myself out of bed!- to focus on my triceps, shoulders, back, and more core. After those circuits, I did a plyometrics circuit for my cardio and I somehow talked myself into incorporating burpees. I’m all high and mighty planning the workouts, but when it comes time to doing it, I question everything I believe in. For the record, I do the workout (unless I’m in excruciating pain) because I am no quitter!

My body is very happy to hear it will be resting tomorrow for an off-day, though it won’t say no to a walk at some point to stretch out those muscles!

It’s (she’s?) been happy because I cut my workouts down to about an hour and I am reaping the benefits! Maybe it’s because I reinvented what I’ve been doing and am not spending so much time exercising, but I’ve been stronger, more excited, and healthier. Too little and too much of something is never good. Get out there and move!

I’m Onto You, Suzanne Summers

I had a dream two nights ago that Suzanne Summers was stalking me, so you better believe I’ve been checking over my shoulder whenever I leave the house. We were cool Ms. Summers, don’t pull a Liza on me.* In the dream, we were participating in a Hunger Games-esque event, except it had nothing to do with death. If I remember correctly, then if Suzanne “tagged” me, then I had to go live outside in nature. This all seemed very plausible in my dream, but now makes no sense at all.

*If you forgot that Liza Minelli stalks me, then lucky you. It’s a thing. I’m sure I’ve written posts about it before. She’s remained stagnant as of late. Let’s not jinx that.

Anyways….is anyone else slightly alarmed that it’s already October 21? I’m sorry, but I thought it was still July of 2012. Time is flying! I better step up my studying because my test date is approaching.

Here are some eats from the past few days we’ve been away from each other.

Scenes from my dad’s birthday dinner Act I. Act II actually doesn’t have a picture, but my family went out and it was fun, happy, and delicious.

IMG_4089

A very interesting looking meal with waffles, scrambled eggs with a chicken sausage, and a big bowl of berries. My breakfasts are often big meals because they fuel me for my workouts and because it’s the best meal of the day.

IMG_4121

This stir fry was impressive. Steak, zucchini, peppers, mushrooms, and spinach over rice with ginger sesame dressing drizzled on top.

IMG_4122

Peanut butter toast can do no wrong.

IMG_4124

Grilled tilapia, broccoli, zucchini, peppers, and rotini. Yum!

IMG_4125

This morning’s plate of cakes. I can’t get enough of these!

IMG_4128

Workouts the past few days included grueling strength training sessions, lap swims, spin classes, long runs (slightly painful thanks to new shoes which I’ll debut tomorrow!), and core workouts that left me with sore abs whenever I sneeze (I sneeze a lot, ouch!).

In other news, I hung out with my family a lot this weekend which is always good for laughs and fun, enjoyed the nice weather with a few walks outside, cleaned and prepared for fall/winter (still more to do, ugh!), worked (it’s a blessing to love what I do), and lost a few years of my life trying to buy Star Wars tickets. For whatever reason, they are starting to premiere the new film BEFORE midnight, so my friend Stephanie and I have our tickets for 11:50. We like to stick to the idea of premiering a  movie at midnight, but in this situation, beggars really can’t be choosers. It is very exciting though and we are now two months away!

I can’t get over this picture:

IMG_4123

I also bought another decal for my computer. I like the subtlety of my Harry Potter one that fits right over the apple on the Mac, and I thought I was continuing this trend when I bought this new one. Not so much. It’s huge! I had to cut it.

IMG_4129

I think my nerd is showing just a bit.

Also, my coffee mug looks super creepy in that picture and it was unintentional!

Happy Wednesday!

You Won’t Think It’s Funny When He Bites You In the Ass

The title is a direct quote from my mother from our walk late yesterday afternoon. My dog,  Mac, likes to be the front person on walks and goes out of his way to get there if one of his people happens to be in front of him. I was playing this game when my mom semi-shouted the phrase as we walked past a playground. Only one mother turned and glared. We both laughed hard.

The other book I want to review this week is The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. It was such a great thriller and a fun way to spend a Sunday. I sat down with it on the couch intending to read only for a few minutes, but ended up finishing it. Other things did get done throughout the day, but I kept wanting to get back to it. I thought I had it figured out a few times, but she kept me guessing up until the very end. The ending was actually satisfying, which if you read my blog regularly, you know is a huge compliment from me. The characters were realistic and intriguing, somewhat likeable and relatable, but I did care what ended up happening to them. It really is the perfect spring/summer read and I understand why it has been the talk of the bookstore/library.

Exercise round up of the past two days,  I ran/walked on Wednesday morning for five miles and finished my day with another two mile walk after work. I was back in the gym on Friday for a body strength workout and a swim that included some sprints. Of course, as you know from above, I also walked Thursday afternoon.

Breakfasts of the past two days include a breakfast sandwich made with egg, ham, and pepperjack on an English muffin one day.

Peanut buttery oatmeal the other. I actually ran out of my chocolate peanut butters and was very sad about for two days until I was able to stock up. Phew.

Lunches were the same the past two days. Stir fried veggies, tilapia, rice with a dash of hot sauce.

Dinners were also excellent. I had deconstructed tacos on Wednesday, which pretty much means I had taco meat with cheese, tostito chips, and a salad.

And quite possibly the best food ever, my mom’s homemade macaroni and cheese. Oh, with green beans and chicken too.

Happy Friday everyone!

Springtime is A Happy Time

I’m just sitting here typing away outside in my backyard because it is freaking spectacular out. Seriously, I’m just obsessed with this weather. No one can be mad at this weather.

It helped that I got my day started off the right way. I mean, how can you not be utterly overjoyed when this face greets you? This is part of my Harry Potter tear away calendar and I just find it so funny that it’s literally just a picture of Filch. Speaking of, it’s almost that time again!! My annual Harry Potter reread is one of my favorite parts of the summer.

Before then, I have a few books I need to finish!

To really fey my day going, I took it to the mat to do a Yoga flow. Listen, my body is not ready so early to do Yoga. I am so stiff. I’m thinking I need to mix things up a bit and run first in order to loosen everything up. I thought it would be the opposite, but man, it was tricky. I did get my run in after. 3.1 miles of running and I finished up the fourth mile with a walk. To end, I did a few sprints that really got the heart racing.

It was so nice out that not even almost getting hit by a car prevented me from enjoying my run. Seriously, a car hugged the curb too tight, never came to a stop at a stop sign and almost took me out. She didn’t even look at me, either because she didn’t notice, which is a huge problem in itself, or because she was ignoring my screaming at her. The big issue is that a child had just been walking his dog in that same spot a moment before me and he might not have thought to stop like I did.

Be careful driving, friends! Especially now that it’s so nice out again.

I got home a little later than usual, so I had time only for a bowl of cereal before heading into work. A little chopped banana made things a little sweeter. Once I got to work, I had a cup of Greek Yogurt I found at Trader Joes- peanut butter and jelly! It was interesting. Not bad, but also not my favorite. I do like putting my own peanut butter into plain Greek yogurt and I suspect that has way less sugar.

Lunch was a grilled cheese sandwich with a side of veggie sticks and some popcorn. It was just one of those days.

Dinner is in the process of being grilled as I speak. Grilled chicken, a great big Greek salad, some green beans, and a baked potato.

In other breaking news of the day, I ate some moldy gum. I didn’t know gum could mold. But it does.

May Greetings!

It must be the end of the week because I just had to be told I was wearing my sweatshirt backwards. The terrible thing is, I thought it was strange when I couldn’t find the front pocket, but it didn’t alert me to maybe see what was happening. One could say I have so many other things going on, I couldn’t be bothered with such frivolous details. One would be too kind.

The day started off with a little bit of an eff you from my alarm. I thought I still had some time, so I rolled over to lay on my side just as my alarm blared. It was really mean, but it offended me such much, it woke me right up. Nicely played, Siri? *When speaking in terms of iPhones, I just blame Siri for everything.

I got things moving with a body strength workout at the gym. Side step ups are harder than they look, especially when followed by elevated calf raises, two different types of squats, two different kinds of lunges, kneeling kickbacks using a very tight resistance band, and elevated hip lifts on a stability ball. My legs were sore! I also went through tricep dips, push ups, mountain climbers, mermaid raises, sit ups, Russian twists, and roll outs. After, I was stoked to hop in the pool, even though it was a bit crowded and I was wall side in my lane, which in hate because I feel claustrophobic. I also enjoy swimming in the middle lanes of the pool because it has the whole open water effect. I’m a freak, I know. *For the record, if you out me in actual open water, I would panic and drown myself by accident. I fit in a solid mile and left the gym jazzed for the day.

For breakfast, I heated up the new breakfast sandwich machine to excellent results. It’s super easy to use, it’s fast, and you don’t have to do much fussing about, so I can get organized without feeling rushed. This also allows me a little longer time at the gym. Fresh fruit topped off my yummy meal.

I was- ok, my mom- was right about the whole fat in my meal thing. A little cheese left me fuller for longer and I didn’t even think of eating again until a few, appropriate, hours later. Lunch was a stir fry with buckwheat noodles,  chicken, veggies, and the aforementioned cheese. For a snack, I had the juiciest orange and a cup of Trader Joes coconut cream Greek yogurt that was incredible. Seriously, it was so good, but it did have a little more sugar than I would normally allot for a snack.

It was all about the veggies for dinner. I tossed a shaved Brussels sprout salad together for a fresh side, malong with kebabs with grilled chicken, pepper, and zucchini. Because we were going to make it earlier in the week and didn’t, we also had cauliflower au gratin and a side of brown spinach rice. So good!

It’s Friday, friends, which means one more morning until I can sleep in! Also, only a few more hours until I get to see my husband, Chris Evans, up on the big screen again. Avengers Assemble!

Oh! And happy. May!
