At least you’re not the Yankees today…

Welcome back from the weekend, we’ve survived another hot one.

My Friday started, as it usually does, nice and early thanks to a 4:30am wake-up call. This also means my weekend kicks off early, so I can’t complain. After work and a solid strength training workout, I lounged around the house for a bit before it was Red Sox v. Yankees time. I almost feel bad for the Yankees, but not quite.

I headed into the game with a friend who happens to be a Yankees fan. I did feel bad for her team of losers and made sure to sing along to Sweet Caroline nice and loud for her.

In college, I was so used to walking to and from the game from just down the street and afterwards, driving into the city, that taking the subway was an adventure. A very hot, sticky, and crowded adventure.

On Saturday, I had a leisurely morning, sleeping in and enjoying breakfast.

My niece and sister came over for the day and we had a great time just watching this little face.

It’s crazy how fast they grow!

I went to bed early for a Saturday night and was up early on Sunday morning to fit in a run before my hair appointment. It was warm, but dry outside and I cruised for a solid 4 miles of running. Felt strong!

After grocery shopping and touching up my roots, it was meal prep time. I chopped up a ton of veggies for salads and made my breakfast for today.

I started watching Sharp Objects on HBO, so far so good.

How’s your Monday treating you?

Let the Rain Come

Hello Monday and hello to you!

Once again, I can’t believe how fast the weekend flew by. I had a ton of fun in the sun and spent the majority of the weekend relaxing. It might be a rainy week ahead, but at least we’ll all be at work anyway.

My friend/client snapped this shot of me training her on Friday afternoon. We were laughing, but really I was trying to get her to stop talking long enough to actually exercise!

Lunch was a BLT salad.

That afternoon, this guy had his annual check-up. He’s doing great! I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since I adopted him. He’s the joy of my life.

Later, I got to cuddle with the cutest baby I know, little Lily.

On Saturday, I woke up and had a breakfast of an egg on toast with a sprinkling of cheese.

It fueled me through a 2.25 mile run, including a massive hill at the end. Woo.

My reward was an afternoon on the beach with my BFF!

It was a blast soaking up the sun and diving into waves. We headed into the city after for a drink and to walk around. It was such a lovely night outside and it was great walking around our old college neighborhood.

Sunday morning included what I’m branding the BELT- bacon, egg, lettuce, and tomato. Delicious! We attended mass in the morning in honor of the anniversary of my grandfather’s passing.

It was a nice moment to celebrate with family and we all went out to eat after.

That night, I went on a long walk with my parents, made these Skinnytaste bagels, and got some Sunday night things done.

Anything great happen this weekend?

Monday Morning

Happy Monday!

Mondays always come as a bit of a shock because my day starts at 4:30am when my alarm blares at me. After some cuddling time with Simba, I have to rush to get everything together and get to work at 5am.

This weekend was a good one. After work on Friday, I swam 40 laps, about 1.1 miles. I’m just getting back into swimming and so far, I’m loving it. I have to be super careful because I dye my hair blonde, but my precautions have thus far been successful. I can already feel the benefits swimming has had on my running, which was evident on Saturday morning. Friday night, I had dinner with my family and then was happy to fall into bed.

Saturday morning kicked off with a homemade breakfast sandwich, a strength circuit, and a solid 3.1 mile run.

Later that afternoon, I got my haircut, which always feels amazing! I really need to stick to the stylist when it comes to dyeing my hair. It’s too much of a hassle for an ok turnout when I do it on my own. Not to mention I left it on for too long last time and had a strip of silvery purple for a few days…

That night, I saw Black Panther with my friend Stephanie. It was excellent! I was anxious the entire time, but it was all for good.

I slept in a bit on Sunday (for me that’s now 8:30am!) and woke up in time to start a big breakfast. Please appreciate the Mickey waffle.

IMG_3277.JPG

After finishing some necessary chores, I fit in a solid workout at the gym, including another mile run. For lunch, I made homemade beef and broccoli (with cauliflower) and brown rice. So good! The marinade included 2 tablespoons bbq sauce, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, and some garlic. I made enough for two servings and have leftover meat.

I also roasted some chickpeas to have for the week, including my dinner, this kale Caesar salad with shrimp.

The rest of Sunday was spent writing, working on the updated blog, and relaxing with the cutest cat around.

Have a great day, everyone!

weekend things

Sixteen years has felt like a lifetime and no time at all. Today, of course, marks the sixteenth anniversary of 9/11. It is a tragedy beyond scope of understanding and my thoughts remain with the victims and their families.

This time of year also marks the sixteenth anniversary of two important losses in my life, my Grandpa in July and my Nana just a few days ago. I was 11 when they passed and I’m going to be turning 28 in a few months. It seems so strange, how much time has passed, how much I have grown and changed and yet, how much I still miss them, not just on the anniversary, but every day.

My weekend started on Friday afternoon when I left work and headed out for a day with my mom. We shopped for wine, enjoyed lunch, and then relaxed the rest of the day. That night, I met up with some friends for dinner. It was so much fun to catch up, but unfortunately what I thought was allergies ended up being a full blown cold.

I made it through work on Saturday with a runny nose, sore throat, and stuffy ears, and even attempt a half hour on the bike, but spent the rest of the day curled up with this guy.

IMG_2141.JPG

Saturday night, I went over my friend Katie’s house with our other friend Stephanie where we made dinner and watched movies- The Lion King and Bad Grandpa.

IMG_2149.JPG

I probably shouldn’t have stretched my poor throat too far and I assure you my vocals were not up to par, but I had fun singing along to The Lion King anyway. Especially as my new kitten’s name is Simba…

On Sunday, it was shopping day. My mom, sister, and I headed up to the local outlets. My main purchase was new shoes. I got my running gait looked at and realized I have flat feet, so I needed special shoes. I’m excited to learn how much this affects my running!

IMG_2156.JPG

The other “big” purchase was a chewing toy for Simba. I’m not sure if kittens teeth, but he seems to need a sturdy toy in which to bite, that is not my hand! He loved the carrot and the box from my shoes.

IMG_2152.JPG

It was a low-key-ish weekend as I still try to fully recover from this cold. At the moment, the worst of it is a stuffed-up ear that’s throwing off my equilibrium a tad. Not fun, but I’m on the mend.

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday!

When I looked back at my phone to write up this post, I really thought there would be more pictures to share, but I was wrong.

I hope you get really jazzed for this single photo of pancakes.

Now that I think about it, I did take a lot of pictures, but on Snapchat or Instagram Stories, so they’re lost in the Internet abyss now.

On Friday, I headed over to my friend’s house for some wine and My Favorite Murder talk. That sounds terrifying, but it’s actually a podcast that I am currently obsessed with. I’m new to the phenomenon to the show and it seems like a great idea to binge-listen to a bunch of episodes until I crawl into bed and turn my light off at night.

Friday into Saturday, I woke up to use the restroom in the middle of the night and twisted my ankle. I’m still not sure what happened, and I had just been congratulating myself on six years of some heavy workouts without injury, but I think my leg must have been asleep or I was still half asleep and I crumpled. Thankfully, I got a wrap for it and was able to exercise without any pain.

Saturday, I woke up to enjoy some waffles and a workout that left me a sweaty mess in the best of ways. After some leisure time, I headed over to a friend’s house to hop in their pool (no underwater dunking for this blonde who does not want to be green-headed), wine, food, and laughter.

When I checked my phone Sunday morning, I could have sworn it said 6:00am, but then I glanced at it again, seemingly mere minutes later, it was 8:00am! Not sure if I fell asleep and didn’t realize or it took my phone a minute to wake up, but wow, mind meld. It was a quiet morning in which I made pancakes and listened to My Favorite Morning, sweated it out, grocery shopped, and did a mixture of things like writing and reading the rest of Sunday because it was hot.

Now we’re back to Monday. Have a great week!

weekend, workout, and waffles

And here we are again at Monday…no complaints because I had a fine weekend for myself.

On Friday, I’d been battling a headache, so I went to the gym after work to try and work it off. When in doubt, I usually can fight things off with a solid workout, and I was right! There’s nothing quite like a hard-hitting strength workout followed up by a sweaty run to get you into the Friday vibes. The rest of Friday included a casual evening of good food, tv watching, and SLEEP. I cannot emphasize my love for going to sleep on a Friday night knowing there is nothing pressing on Saturday. GLORIOUS.

The difference between my Friday night dinner:

Is in the side dish:

C905EC29-96F6-4902-8DCF-3E85FE6D46D3

Both were delicious and celebratory as Saturday was National Waffle Day.

On Saturday, I nailed a shoulder, ab/adductor, glute, and core workout before hitting the spin bike for a HIIT ride. I walked to and from the gym to fit in some extra rays (I’m hoping my east-coasters will find me TAN when I go home for a wedding next month – if you comment on it then, you get a cookie because then I know you’re reading my blog). Next, I headed to an LA staple, the Getty Museum in the Hollywood Hills (I think). My friend and I took the architecture tour which was interesting. Art is not my thing exactly, but I have more maturity than I did in the third grade (sort-of) and was able to appreciate it more. Would still rather be seeing a Broadway show to fill my culture quota, but I’m afraid that the closest this girl gets to “cultured” is pop.

That view though!

My friend and I ate dinner at a cheesy Italian restaurant before driving back. We passed a man dressed in full Jester costume, with make-up, hanging out under the freeway, and it was spooky. Yay for expressing yourself? So long as there’s no nefarious deeds being done.

This is what I enjoyed while watching my show, curled up on the couch.

IMG_0757

Yup, that is fact. It has a slightly different texture than regular ice cream, but it’s still delicious. For the record, I did not eat it all in one sitting, although, I totally could have.

I enjoyed sleeping in again on Sunday before I woke up for some pancakes. I’m obsessed with my small pan because it makes the perfect omelette, as evidenced in the two above pictures. After I digested, it was time for a run.

I wish I snapped a picture because I ran along the bike path (it’s allowed, I checked), which is by a river. It eventually leads to the ocean, but I wasn’t up for that yet. It’s quick-ish on a bike, but a bit far for a run (for me) to and fro. I also got in some at-home yoga, which felt like a nice stretch and extended my sweat time for a bit.

For fuel, I gobbled down a pb&j, showered, then headed out to treat myself to a massage. It was just what I needed. At work, I am constantly on my feet and running around, and I add some grueling, yet satisfying workouts six days a week, so my body needed some love. For whatever reason, I carry my stress (which to be fair, isn’t a lot, but it exists) in my top left shoulder. When I was at a job I was stressing over a few years ago, I had to ask the masseuse to stop as he prodded my knots, but these ones were easy-peasy.

The stress-relief lasted until I tried to find a parking spot at Trader Joes, but fortunately, it didn’t take too long and I quickly grabbed my things and got home.

It was time for whatever I was making in this bad-boy (lunches for the week and Sunday night’s dinner).

Chicken chili, served this evening with a handful of tortilla chips.

E9D139A9-DD9F-4FA0-A70A-85A43A06A54F

Chock full of veggies – collard greens, red bell peppers, zucchini, and corn – beans – black and red – and chicken! SO good and SO easy. I had shopped the night before for a few items I needed so that I could toss everything together in the morning. Meal prep = simple and healthy with a crockpot.

The rest of the evening was productive with laundry and writing. I’ve given myself a homework assignment that I’ll fill you in on later in the week. Don’t fret, it’s the good kind.

Happy Monday!

sunset in stages

I don’t think I can effectively speak to how beautiful California is. I am constantly amazed by the sights and wonders of this state and I know I’ve only ever seen a small part of it. To cap off my weekend, I went to Griffith Observatory to catch the sunset. Every night should end like this:

Magnificent.

This weekend was the perfect amount of relaxing and active with as much time spent outside as I possibly could get. This weather is the kind I expected when I moved out here.
