one year

Auntie Bea

Dear Auntie Bea,

A year is a long time and yet, it hasn’t felt like any time has passed at all. I miss you. It’s that simple. But your presence in my life is ever-lasting.

I think of you often, in that proverbial ‘I miss her so much’ kind of way, but in other ways too. Blowing up the air mattress because “I don’t want to spoil the punchline, but…Mac popped the air mattress;” ordering chicken parm at a restaurant because you’d laugh and say you expected nothing less; whiskey because it was your go-to drink, ice on the side, so you didn’t get stiffed; going to a movie because it was our thing, right before Thanksgiving; and Thanksgiving and Christmas because holidays don’t feel real without you sitting in your chair;  watching ‘The Good Wife’ because you loved that show; playing board games because you were competitive and funny and always up for a good time; eating at Bea Bea’s pancake diner because it was our nickname for you; lounging on the beach, any beach, and thinking of the Cape; sitting in a library because you were once banned from one for complaining about the wifi during read-aloud time; feeling cold because you’d yell at us to shut the door and throw on multiple blankets; attending the Women’s March because you were one of the strongest women I’ve ever known; hearing ‘Happy Birthday’ sung out loud because no one did it as beautifully terrible as you; eating ice cream with joy; flipping the bird at poor driving; calling someone ‘fresh’; acting fresh; being brave, confident, and happy; and in so many more ways, every single day.

A lot has changed over the year since you’ve been gone. You’ve probably seen it all, so I won’t get into it. But here’s the thing. A few years ago, you said how important it was for us to laugh and cherish the good times because this was how you wanted to be remembered. I never anticipated the day that we’d have to say goodbye, and I still can’t believe it’s already been a year, but you were right. We remember the good times. They were great times and they are cherished. You are cherished and loved and missed.

So thank you for being with me then. And thank you for staying with me now.

Love,

Caitlin

Wednesday Friend Day

Pictures on this gorgeous Wednesday afternoon include this stylistic sky shot of blissful blue:

And a shoddy nail job:

I’m blaming the sticky nail polish on this one!

Apparently today is National Best Friends Day, which means I have to honor these people in some way. Hmm.

I had to throw it back to before the blonde hair, so methinks it’s time to get a new picture, ladies! Happy National BFF Day. I guess you’re cool.

On another note, today I started with a workout focused on the shoulders and ending with a run because it is seriously super nice out! I also met up with my friend Alison for lunch and now I’m typing away in the backyard, soaking up the rays before work!

Go hug your best friend, or at least shoot them a text.

Unseasonable Weather and Other Moments

Holy Monday it’s warm! My car registered 61 degrees this morning…February 1! Not only am I definitely not complaining, but I am moments away from running, hopping, skipping, and jumping my booty outside for some me time. There is no snow on the ground, no snow in the forecast (knock on wood), and it’s warm and sunny. Not too shabby for a Monday.

This weekend was busy, but uneventful. Friday was my rest day from the gym, but I was up at 4:30 AM for work, napped, went out for a pizza and salad lunch with my mom, then worked some more! That night, I went bowling and pretty much killed the first round (and lost terribly the next).

Saturday started with more work, luckily not as early. After, I fit in a pretty great workout that I wasn’t sure would happen since I was feeling tired. Strength training included biceps, back, shoulders, and core, followed up with a run on the treadmill. I hadn’t been outside in a long time, but I should have just glanced out the window and realized it would have been better to run outside. Missed opportunity!

My Sunday started with some grocery shopping and a workout I put together for my sister and me. We started on the elliptical to warm up with some cardio, then hit the weights to work our triceps, chest, legs, and core. Phew. Our post-workout meal was a late brunch we put together ourselves, including berry pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon. Yum! I also met this little dude yesterday. My new nephew, Coconut.

It took us awhile to get him to come out from under the bed, but he quickly warmed up to his Auntie. Playing with him made me miss my little guy that much more, remembering all the times we used to play and laugh with Bandit.

The other night, my mom was using my laptop to put together a PowerPoint Presentation and she happened to click a random button that popped up with a video that was apparently taken on my computer. I clicked on it, not knowing what it was, and it turned out that a few years ago, I had filmed Bandit watching cat videos to see if he had a reaction. At one point, I had reached my hand over to pet him, which he enjoyed for a few moments, before turning on me and biting my hand! It was such a typical Bandit moment and my mom and I burst out laughing (the tears are coming now thinking about it). Had I seen that two weeks ago, I would have been torn apart by grief, but as things get easier I found it was just what I needed.

Funny how life happens sometimes.

Happy Birthday, Maura

Today marks the birthday of one of my very favorite people in this world. Thanks for the many trips to New York, Connecticut, into Boston, and at the Stage Door; for being a voice of reason and support; a vote of constant confidence and wisdom; for being the best cousin and Godmother; and for your overall kindness and brilliance.

May your day be as wonderful as you are, Maura (although I don’t see how that’s possible)!

Sometimes, You Just Need Whipped Cream

I shared this note last night on Facebook, but I wanted to extend the sentiment on my blog:

The beautiful thing about people like David Bowie and Alan Rickman is that they lived as their authentic selves. Creativity sparks ideas, inspiration, and movement. Such endeavors appeal to our humanity. It’s why we love them. It’s why we mourn. At the end of the day, we are all human. We all suffer, struggle, and fail, but these passionate types, these people, they, we, we all triumph, shine, and overcome. In death, we love and we grieve, but we also remember that they have lived, with us and for us, and that is a remarkable thing.

So when they say, “Let’s Dance,” we respond, “Always.”

A bit on the less serious side: Exciting news! According to Facebook, I joined the social media world 10 years ago from this very day. I don’t know how to feel about this. Old, for one. I was in high school 10 years ago. From my calculations, I would have been 16, so a sophomore? Yikes. A lot has changed in the past 10 years and I’m not ashamed to say, the majority of that has been for the good. If we’re being real though, that’s not so much a milestone for me as it is for Facebook. Good for you, book of faces.

On a list of other random happenings in my life, I’m beginning to suspect that I’m just into hot chocolate for the whipped cream on top. I’m not even sorry. Yes, the chocolatey, warm goodness makes the melty whipped cream taste that much better, but when I’ve had my share of the cream and it’s just the hot chocolate left, I’m all, eh.

My morning started with a quick, repeating meal before my Spin class. Peanut butter and jelly on an English Muffin. Wrong cannot be done with this combination. Warm, toasty, peanutty, and sweet.

IMG_4832.JPG

For my workout, it included the aforementioned Spin class, which was killer thanks to a ton of sprints and hill climbing. It’s butt-kicking, but works up a great sweat! I finished with a brief core workout before heading home to get my inner- Yogi on.

I’ll also take you back to last night’s dinner of chicken drumsticks, brown spinach rice, roasted Brussels sprouts, and a big salad.

Now onto the work, work, work that needs to be done. It’s Friday though, so Happy Weekend-having to you all!

2015 Blogging In Review

Here at Give Me My Crown Already, or maybe I should start using GMMCA, we like to celebrate occasions, all big and small. While I like to think we can start anew on all things good and fresh at any time, there’s something about the end of the year that makes you look back and reflect, as much as there’s something to looking towards a new year that makes you energized.

Having a blog really helps someone take a glance back at the past year!

A lot happened, as it seems to in life, most good, some sad, but they’ve all led me here.

The most popular post of the year was very clearly my open letter to Joy Behar after she blasted nurses for no reason.

http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/09/19/dear-joy-behar-a-thank-you-from-a-nurses-child/

Though my fame didn’t extend much farther than this post, it was still nice to have a brush of success. A preview of things to come, I hope. Though maybe I turned people off with my casual and totally innocent mocking of a faux-apocalypse scare.

For whatever reason, that I still do not understand, another popular post was the one that I entitled after a song.

http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/08/20/if-i-showed-you-my-flaws-if-i-couldnt-be-strong/

This is one of the most-searched and most-linked to posts and I don’t even remember what it’s about other than mentioning that song.

We had a lot of fun with recipes this year, something that I hope to do even more of in 2016. Stir fry for example.

http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/09/01/food-good-good-food-ive-got-it-all/

We also dedicated a lot of time to watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I can firmly tell you, there are no regrets.

http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/07/21/end-of-an-era-i-think-ive-used-that-joke-before/

Though I will tell you, there was a lot of hesitancy to start a new show so soon.

In the top two exciting things to happen in 2015, my sister and now brother-in law made things official and tied the knot this past June! I, of course, made a spectacular Maid of Honor, lacking only in humility.

http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/06/28/the-wedding/

What a perfect day it was with the weather, love, happiness, family, and friends!

Another of the top two most exciting things to happen to me, was when I decided to take a chance and make a change when it came to my professional life. Work is a huge part of how we live, love it, hate it, or grudgingly accept it, so we should make it count. I was miserable where I was and I was scared to move forward, but with a lot of support and a moment of blind courageousness, I took a chance. To get to work where I do now, with the people I’m working beside, and feeling as though I have a purpose, that is a blessing.

http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/07/13/changes/

This all led to a significant moment in my life that has been building for the past four years when I finally woke up and realized I needed to take responsibility for my life and choices. As an early Christmas present, I took and passed the test that marks me a certified Personal Trainer and I am so so excited to finally get started.

http://givememycrownalready.com/2015/12/21/ive-got-news/

2015 was a year with up’s and down’s and I’m very much choosing to reflect on all of the good in this post. I probably haven’t even gotten too deep into what this year offered me, but I’m so happy to have taken the time and opportunity to delve into it a bit so that I can truly leave 2015 feeling as though I lived through it with purpose, pleasure, and effort.

Take a minute of your day to do the same with your’s.

The Thong Song

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and are still feeling good vibes heading into the new year. I for one had a wonderful time, but I’m ready to get back into the groove of solid routine, especially in terms of food. Too many tempting sweets!

Let’s get right back into it!

Yesterday, after Yoga and a brief, but sweaty run, my friend Katie came over for brunch. I’m always saying I make better breakfast/brunch than restaurants, so I needed to prove myself. A ham and cheese omelet, toast, and a side of spinach and peppers was a solid force.

IMG_4774.JPG

I worked for much of the day, so lunch was a quick bite of leftovers and dinner was Chinese food while watching the first Star Wars with my family. Side note, there is this game Fibbage you play on your phones and over some kind of video game device and it’s hilarious. I recommend it for New Years’ shenanigans.

This morning, I made myself a warm bowl of oats. Haven’t had this one in awhile! I was missing the mashed banana as grocery shopping still needed to be done, but it was an excellent breakfast.

IMG_4775.JPG

After a short shift at work, I fit in a workout with my friend Nouha. The focus was on triceps, shoulders, and legs, followed up with some core. We ran out of time on the cardio front, but it was still a good sweat!

My post-workout lunch included eggs, toast, veggies, and fruit.

IMG_4776.JPG

I really am on a huge egg kick lately, but I’m trying to back off on those waffles! Can’t go wrong with eggs breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Some random things to note.

I forgot how comfortable boots are! They’re like cushions for my feet. I’m not pleased that the reason I pulled them out of the closet was due to a pending snow-something (I won’t say storm), but my feet are happy in their ignorant bliss.

IMG_4777.JPG

In an this-would-happen-to-me-scenario, a few days ago, Facebook wanted me to share a “special memory” that occurred 8 years ago. I don’t know why they thought this one should be re-posted, especially because they only prompt such a thing once every few weeks, but I had to screenshot it and share the oddness.

IMG_4773.PNG

That is a thong…lying on the ground at a tourist site in some European country my sister visited 8 years ago and I tagged myself in to be funny. I really hope someone took the time to do this, but it’s probably just the computer being random. (OR, computers are gaining senses of humor/irony, which means we’re all pretty much screwed.

Anyone else have the Thong Song stuck in their heads now?
