aaaand we’re back.

We’re looking a little different around here these days! A fresh start was much needed and I think things are looking good. Please also note that in order to find the blog, the link is now http://www.strongerwithcaitlin.com.

Here’s a funny story to start your Monday off on the right foot. A week ago, in the wee hours of the morning, I heard Simba playing. He jumped up and was super cuddly, a common occurrence for him. Still half asleep and in the dark, I start petting him until I feel something moist but solid next to him. At first, I felt bad for the little guy, thinking he threw up or had a hairball, but then I realized in a year of having him, he’d never been sick. It hit me, in one of those sickening punchy ways what it was. A DEAD MOUSE. I threw it across the room and jumped up, trying to be quiet and thankful to Simba for his hard work, but also deeply disgusted. I stepped on it. At 4:30am, I was scrubbing my hands and feet and then had to throw away the mouse before work.

How are you?

I’m feeling quite well! My mom and I are on Weight Watchers together and we’ve both made great strides. Thus far, I am down 14.2 pounds.

This weekend, I tried on a pair of black pants I had purchased a few years ago assuming they would fit, but they were always too tight. They fit PERFECTLY this weekend. It’s the small things with weight loss that keep you going.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a weekend recap. In the meantime, check out the new sections of the blog, including an updated My Weight Loss Journey, Personal Training, and Writing.

Enjoy your Monday!

a week in review

This past week, I started a new job, which I’m using as my excuse for not having blogged. In recap, I went to a book signing to pick up Sarah Michelle Gellar’s cookbook and kind of met her. I say kind of because I was flustered, had no idea what to say, and freaked out a little. It’s unnatural to meet a celebrity who means a lot to you, particularly for playing my favorite character of anything ever, Buffy, and them having no idea who you are. What do you even say? She was very nice, but my instinct was to push my friend Brad out of my picture, so I can’t really say the same about myself. We’re calling it my Selina Meyer moment. If you know me, feel free to text and ask to see the picture of me pushing him because it PLAYS OUT THE ENTIRE THING. #embarrassed.

Friday was momentous because it was a day off. I took advantage by eating a great breakfast, fitting in a solid workout, grocery shopping for the week, and then watching the entire new season of Grace and Frankie. Jane Fonda + Lily Tomlin = epic. But maybe I should have done more with my life.

On Saturday, I was up early to go to Six Flags with my friend Brad (it’s a wonder that he still wanted to hang out with me). I like to think of myself a roller coaster connoisseur, but the first ride we went on, which spins you 360 while hurtling head first down a bunch of drops, made me rethink my entire life. The thing about Six Flags is that they have cool rides, but the longest lines and terrible guest service. I’m a Disney girl to my core, so I guess ambiance is more important to me than I thought. We were there from open to close, 11 hours, and only got on six rides.

Sunday, I enjoyed an Easter meal with my cousins Meghan and Sebastian. It was a hard decision between sweet and savory, and then pancakes and french toast, but ultimately it was the french toast that won out. It was delicious!

But I felt very full.

There must be something to that carbo-loading theory though because once I digested and hydrated enough, I had a wonderful, strong run. Maybe it was the sun.

It was a productive afternoon of meal planning, exercise planning, cleaning, and online shopping. I needed new sneakers, both for work and for play (running and general living).

So far, I’ve been successful with my morning workouts. I love the feeling of having finished my workout.

Now onto Tuesday!

My Washer/Dryer Is Trying to Kill Me, Among Other Things

It took exactly two weeks, but I’m happy to be back in the world of employment! A start to chasing those dreams.

On a side note, my washer/dryer is trying to kill me.

I know I’m lucky  to have a washer/dryer (it’s an all-in-one machine, which is strange in itself to this suburbia kid!), but the machine promises “quiet” and “effective” and all I hear are confusing, loud banging noises and it takes hours. I  have to leave my clothes in for a slow dry if I want them to dry at all. Ah, the markings of being an apartment renter! This isn’t Kansas anymore, kid! (But also, I’m thankful for not having grown up in Kansas, not that there’s anything wrong with it per say, but- I’m losing focus).

In summary, the washer/dryer is freaking loud and I think it is trying to kill me.

So how about Tuesday?

Things got moving early (and by early, I mean a lot of people would side-eye me for that comment if they knew what time I awoke) around here. After hopping in the shower, I enjoyed breakfast.

After spending the morning running around town, and by town, I mean Hollywood, I came home ready for lunch! Thank goodness for meal prep! Quinoa, black beans, corn, broccoli, orange pepper, and soyaki! A side of hummus and chips complemented flavors nicely.

Dinner was out with a classmate of mine from college who just happened to move to LA about a month before me. I can’t tell you how great it was to see a friendly, familiar face, especially one who is facing the same challenges and positives as me! For food, I had a cup of yummy chicken tortilla soup and a side of brussels sprout and bacon mash. I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into with that dish, but it was just mashed potatoes with some chunks of sprouts and bacon. With cheese!

For a workout, I got things moving with a bicep, back, and core workout and finished with twenty minutes on the spin bike.

I’m feeling good! How ’bout you?

Confessions of a Chocaholic

I have a problem, two actually, and neither include that supposed apocalypse that was hyped. Well, so far, we’re safe.

First problem, my sweet tooth is out of control. Sugar is addictive and I am not strong against it. We’ve discussed my want for ice cream at length. I don’t just mean during the warm summer months. The need is hard even during the frigid winter. A day without ice cream is a wasted day, not worth living something in which I have to grow accustomed.

When it comes to sweets, I’m not big on the fruity candy or fancy desserts. I love ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate. On occasion, I’ll enjoy some cake so long as there’s ice cream on the side (don’t even think about putting it on top!).

Here’s what I have become.

Yes, that is a candy wrapper (one of the Hershey miniatures) stuck in my STEERING WHEEL. In my defense, except there is no defense, the wind picked it up from one of my cup dispensers when I was driving with my windows down and it must have lodged into the wheel. I had to snap a pic and share in the embarrassment. If we can’t laugh, then I’m just a little bit pathetic.

I think we’ve all learned to pick up after ourselves and maybe to better combat cravings.

That second problem I mentioned: flies! I am being hunted down by what I’m pretty sure is the same pack of flies, whether I’m at work, running, sitting in my backyard, and even in my bedroom! Okay, that last one was an exaggeration as they were not in my bedroom, but the others were true. Usually it’s mosquitoes that are all up in my business, but they’ve been blessedly absent this summer. Back off, bugs!

Maybe if I stopped eating so much sugar, I wouldn’t seem as sweet…

Let’s move onto food. Last night’s dinner was veggie heavy. I enjoyed a piece of grilled swordfish with brown spinach rice, squash, broccoli, zucchini, and red pepper. Yum!

This morning’s breakfast included an egg, chicken sausage, and pepper jack cheese sandwich with a banana and scoop of chocolate peanut butter.

The goodness fueled me through my morning run before work. I ran two miles and ended with a couple of sprints that left me breathless in the best way! I need to be better about including intervals into my training, but they knock you out! I have some Yoga on the menu for later to top things off.

After work, I had lunch with a friend at Whole Foods. I was good and stacked my plate with lots of yummy vegetables, like fresh bell peppers, grilled artichokes and zucchini, and marinated mushrooms. I then added a scoop of macaroni and cheese and a chicken finger, but we all need our indulgences once in awhile.

Now’s the time for studying in my backyard with the beautiful breeze and warm sun shining down. God, do I love fall!
