aaaand we’re back.

We’re looking a little different around here these days! A fresh start was much needed and I think things are looking good. Please also note that in order to find the blog, the link is now http://www.strongerwithcaitlin.com.

Here’s a funny story to start your Monday off on the right foot. A week ago, in the wee hours of the morning, I heard Simba playing. He jumped up and was super cuddly, a common occurrence for him. Still half asleep and in the dark, I start petting him until I feel something moist but solid next to him. At first, I felt bad for the little guy, thinking he threw up or had a hairball, but then I realized in a year of having him, he’d never been sick. It hit me, in one of those sickening punchy ways what it was. A DEAD MOUSE. I threw it across the room and jumped up, trying to be quiet and thankful to Simba for his hard work, but also deeply disgusted. I stepped on it. At 4:30am, I was scrubbing my hands and feet and then had to throw away the mouse before work.

How are you?

I’m feeling quite well! My mom and I are on Weight Watchers together and we’ve both made great strides. Thus far, I am down 14.2 pounds.

This weekend, I tried on a pair of black pants I had purchased a few years ago assuming they would fit, but they were always too tight. They fit PERFECTLY this weekend. It’s the small things with weight loss that keep you going.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a weekend recap. In the meantime, check out the new sections of the blog, including an updated My Weight Loss Journey, Personal Training, and Writing.

Enjoy your Monday!

Perfect Summer Weekend

Hi! I hope the weekend was glorious! We had great weather all the way through, even though rain was threatening on Saturday.

After work on Friday, I fit in a sweaty total body workout with a little dose of cardio at the end. When I got home, my sister and her family came over to hang outside and I got some quality auntie time.

IMG_4795

I was woken early and abruptly on Saturday by a cat who was ready to seize the day, but once I set him loose, I fell back asleep until almost 10am. I guess I needed my rest!

When I was up for good, I started the day with two poached eggs on a whole wheat toast and a big bowl of watermelon.

IMG_4846

As I digested and hydrated, I watched an episode of Safe on Netflix. I started it on Thursday and was dismayed that I only had time to watch one episode. I was hooked from the start!

I tore myself away from the screen long enough to crush a 3.1 mile run. It was super hot, but my usual trail is shadowy and there was a nice breeze to guide me through. My legs felt strong!

IMG_4849

Upon my arrival home, I jumped in the pool to cool down- much needed- and dived into this Greek salad with chicken. Perfect fuel to re-energize. It looks a little bland because of the blanket of dressing, but I promise there was a load of veggies underneath, including baby spinach, bell peppers, carrots, cucumber, and tomato!

IMG_4851

My mom and I went grocery shopping in the afternoon to prepare for the week- lots of healthy choices! On Weight Watchers, it’s good to mix things up so we don’t get sick of certain foods and turn to less than great options.

I settled down to finish Safe- there were only eight episodes- and was sad, but satisfied when it ended. I sort of predicted the ending by the penultimate episode, but I wasn’t disappointed.

For dinner, I grilled up some shrimp in blackening seasoning, lime juice, teriyaki sauce, and sriracha and they were so good! I threw them atop two corn tortillas with bell peppers, broccoli slaw, and a dollop of sour cream mixed with the same ingredients as the shrimp. Note to remind myself to do this more often, maybe with Greek yogurt! Such a little detail added so much flavor to my meal! I also had a few chips to round out my meal.

IMG_4852

I assume this meal would pair well with cold beer or a tequila beverage of some sort, but I was saving my extra calories for some Saturday night ice cream! What can I say, your girl’s got a sweet tooth.

The rest of the night, I watched the Red Sox and played hard with my main dude. He’s been very busy lately and is constantly on the prowl. Of course, I mean the Sim-dude.

On Sunday, I was up early to hit the beach! We got breakfast to start off the day. Two eggs over easy with whole wheat toast and a big bowl of fruit. My mom shared a slice of bacon with me too.

IMG_4854

My favorite part about the beach is going in the water. It was chilly, but the waves enticing, and we stayed in for quite awhile twice.

IMG_4855

I think that’s actually a person’s Shoulder and not my thumb. And no visit to the beach is complete without some ice cream. It’s all part of healthy living!

Daily Things

I thought I’d give a- probably mundane- rundown of my daily routine. Three days a week, I open up at the gym, so my alarm clock blares at 4:35am. When it’s being unkind, I’ll roll over and see I only have three minutes left to sleep. There is no kind when you have to wake up before 5am, although I have gotten used to it to an extent.

On these days, I get ready very quickly, really just feeding Simba and throwing my breakfast together. I typically work until 1pm and fit in my own workout. If I time my coffee and snacks appropriately, and slept well the night before, I will be motivated to complete an intense workout. If none of the aforementioned happens, then I will go through the motions. Most days, I’m awake enough to put myself through a tough workout, even though my first thought in the morning is I will definitely nap. (I never nap).

IMG_4545

My workouts on MWF are strength training based, sometimes total body, other days split by muscle group- functional and heavy lifting depending on my mood. This part, core included, will take 45-50 minutes. After, I fit in 15-25 minutes of cardio- cycling, arc trainer, and/or jump roping with intervals included.

477326D2-8083-4F5C-9CA3-AAA3F8C86053

Once I leave, it’s lunch time! I try to stick to lean proteins and veggie-heavy dishes, including salads and stir fries, but other times, I’ll have leftovers. Being back on Weight Watchers means my lunches main source of carbs are veggies and fruits.

Before I shower, I spend some quality time with Simba. He’s still only one and loves being chased, so I try to do this as often as possible. The dude loves his friskies, so he can use the exercise too. Although, half the time when I run at him, he throws himself down and demands pats.

He demands pats most of the day and will follow me around, but when I settle down at my computer for writing time, he does settle down to sit in front of the window or under my desk. Right now, he’s actually yelling at me for attention.

IMG_3281

The rest of the night is spent meal prepping, reading, and watching TV or the Red Sox. Of course, Fridays are a little different.

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, I get to sleep in a little longer. I never thought a 6:45am wake-up time would be indulging in sleep. These mornings, I hop out of bed, chug water, and hit the pavement for a run. Sometimes I’ll run straight through for about 3 miles, other times I’ll alternate between running and walking. I get to have a nice, leisurely breakfast before heading to work.

IMG_4556

On Tuesdays, I’m done early, so I follow a similar routine to Mondays and Wednesdays. I work a split shift on Thursdays, so in-between, I’ll meal prep, play with Simba, and write.

For Saturday and Sunday, I choose one day to run and the other to rest, depending on my schedule.

What’s your daily routine look like?

On the Beach

It’s Monday, I’m back from my vacation, but instead of feeling down, I’m feeling revitalized! A vacation was much needed and there’s no better remedy than time away on the beach!

Ok, so this wasn’t the exact beach, but it’s still a picture of me at the beach.

Last week, I worked Monday and Tuesday and took off early morning on the Fourth to head to my cousin and uncle’s house on the beach. Look who got to come along thanks to the heat wave!

Simba did an excellent job adapting to his new beach house and spent a majority of his time exploring and staring outside at all the animals.

Much of the afternoon on the Fourth was spent at the beach and it was HOT. There was a breeze when we started and the water was refreshing, but once we went to dry off, the breeze disappeared. I love reading on the beach, but there’s only so much heat this girl could take, so we headed back to shower and attend a lovely BBQ at a friend’s place.

The night was capped off with some fireworks, as the Fourth of July should. I don’t adore fireworks, especially amateur ones, but the view sure was pretty.

On Thursday, my brother and I cooked up some breakfast to get us started on the day. We spent much of the morning relaxing but when the boys went golfing, the rest of us headed to the beach. Since it wasn’t as hot, I was able to run the 1.25 mile and felt good! I didn’t end up going in the water this time, but I did take a nice walk on the beach and spent some quality time reading!

After a refreshing shower and nice cocktail hour, we went into town for dinner. Pizza was on the menu, as we dined outside by the fire pit! We capped things off with a beverage before calling it a night.

The rain came in on Friday, but we were still able to walk around a local town. We got lunch and headed back to pick up Simba and go home. It was a lovely time!

It was nice to still have the weekend as a buffer after vacation. On Friday afternoon, I fit in a heavy barbell and jump rope workout to combat all the indulgences of the week. For dinner, I enjoyed shrimp tacos, caught up on work, and watched Game Night, which was cute.

Saturday morning called for a run! I crushed 3.1 miles and hopped right into the pool after because even though the intense heat abated a bit, the sun was still hot! I spent a good deal of time reading before my sister and her family came over to enjoy the afternoon. We ate dinner, passed around the baby, and relaxed.

IMG_4646.JPG

On Sunday, I was up early to grocery shop and came home to make a veggie omelette for breakfast. After, I did a body strength circuit workout with jump roping intertwined. I was nice and sweaty after and once again ready to hop into the pool.

The afternoon consisted of reading, writing, and catching up on household things.

How was your weekend?

lifely things

It’s been awhile since we’ve just chatted, so I’m back with a few life updates. As you know if you’ve been reading for awhile, I’ve been a cat mom for the better part of a year now and he’s pretty much taken over my life. He enjoys looking out the window, demanding pats, and following me around the house so that I cannot be productive. Simba is a sweet and healthy boy and I am very grateful for him!

He needs to be touching me at all times.

I’m back to working as a personal trainer, which I love. It’s a rewarding experience to help people begin or re-inspire their health journeys. As I’m learning, there’s never an end,- until, you know…the end- and there’s a whole world of complicated health and wellness information to dissect, so it’s nice to help and learn from clients!

For the past few months, I’ve also been trying to lose weight again. It’s not always a fun or easy process and there’s many ups and downs, but thus far, I’m down ten pounds. For the past few weeks, I’ve been losing 2 ounces a week consistently, so it’s something. I’ll include a little more about that, including what I eat daily in an upcoming blog post.

Much of my week, as everyone’s does, resides around work and daily happenings. My workouts have consisted of three days of running and three days of strength training with shorter bursts of cardio.

Another big part of my life right now is my now month-old niece who is a darling! I’m not sure how her parents feel about posting pictures of her, so I’ll hold off for now. It’s crazy to think that this little bundle, who I didn’t know for 28 years and five months, has now become an integral part of my life.

On weekends, I try to incorporate a healthy mixture of active and relaxing. Since the weather is getting nicer, I enjoy walking, running, hiking, and biking (and staying far away from the gym!) for exercise. Going out with friends and staying in with Simba are equally important.

In addition to picking up my writing, I’ve been reading a lot, from fun summer reads like The Last Mrs. Parrish and some words of life wisdom, such as The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, as well as teaching myself basic coding to gain some computer skills.

I’m excited that summer has finally arrived and happy to be back writing to all of you.

Happy Thursday!

weekend things

Happy Monday, everyone! This weekend was another mix of busy and relaxing, sunny and rainy, and I was all for it.

My Friday started once I finished work and hopped in the pool for a swim. I got through 1.1 in about 45 minutes and was more than ready for lunch, which was a big salad. I had 8pm dinner plans that evening and had to take a nap to 1. Be able to make it ’til then and 2. Not snack on everything in the kitchen. Dinner was fun and we had ice cream for dessert, which always makes life worth living.

My Saturday started with this glorious breakfast. Poached eggs on toast with bacon.

Once I was digested and hydrated, I headed out for a run. It was a perfect day! I do try to make the 3.1, but I ran out of flat real estate and would’ve had to go uphill to finish out, so I stuck to 3 miles. My legs were already feeling shot and it was a struggle to make it through.

That afternoon, my sister and I went for lunch and a movie. First, we hit up a Greek restaurant for gyros.

Then we headed to the theater to take in Lady Bird, which was excellent. Female writer and director Greta Gerwig FTW!

My evening pretty much consisted of this:

I slept in way later than anticipated on Sunday, but I think my body was resting to avoid a cold. Plus, it was rainy, my favorite sleeping condition! I have a slight sniffle and tickle in the throat, but I’m persevering with mind over matter!

Breakfast was a stack of my favorite peanut butter pancakes. Still working on the art of the stack.

D8FBD785-64DB-4BF8-9637-4192499C0254.JPG

My workout was still a solid one. I started with strength training, upper, lower, than a mix of both and ended with 20 minutes of cycling. I love my workouts for my mind and body, but I’m also excited today is my rest day. I was definitely tired by the end.

Post-workout snuggles are always worth it.

IMG_3371.JPG

I got some household stuff done, including laundry and meal prep for today, went grocery shopping, and then relaxed. Sunday’s always call for an early night when I have to work at 5am on Mondays!

Crush your week!

better late than never…

Sorry this is coming to you late today! Yesterday, my sister and her husband came over for dinner and between socializing and preparing for my early morning, I ran out of writing time. Better late than never!

The weather was SPECTACULAR around here yesterday and today. I know it’s problematic BIG TIME in the long run, but for now, I’m enjoying small favors. It’s tough going from the constant warmth of LA to the seasonal changes of the east coast.

Someone really loves the nice weather, it makes window-watching purr-fect.

On Tuesday, I slept in a bit and warmed up with a quick strength circuit of all body exercises. At 7:00 am, it was already in the 50s, so I threw on a sweatshirt and a baseball hat and hit the streets. I got through 3.2 miles fairly comfortably (oof, the double adverb!) and felt nice and strong!

For breakfast, I enjoyed a breakfast sandwich consisting of an egg, chicken sausage patty, and a slice of pepper jack all on top of an english muffin, berries on the side.

For lunch, I had leftovers beef, broccoli, and cauliflower with brown rice.

I helped my mom make an awesome dinner of blackened salmon, steak tips, cheesy potatoes, asparagus and red peppers, and caesar salad. It was SO good and I’m sorry for the lack of pictures.

By the time I hopped into bed on Tuesday night, I had reached 20,000 steps! Hope everyone’s having a great Wednesday!
