2015 Blogging In Review

Here at Give Me My Crown Already, or maybe I should start using GMMCA, we like to celebrate occasions, all big and small. While I like to think we can start anew on all things good and fresh at any time, there’s something about the end of the year that makes you look back and reflect, as much as there’s something to looking towards a new year that makes you energized.

Having a blog really helps someone take a glance back at the past year!

A lot happened, as it seems to in life, most good, some sad, but they’ve all led me here.

The most popular post of the year was very clearly my open letter to Joy Behar after she blasted nurses for no reason.

Though my fame didn’t extend much farther than this post, it was still nice to have a brush of success. A preview of things to come, I hope. Though maybe I turned people off with my casual and totally innocent mocking of a faux-apocalypse scare.

For whatever reason, that I still do not understand, another popular post was the one that I entitled after a song.

This is one of the most-searched and most-linked to posts and I don’t even remember what it’s about other than mentioning that song.

We had a lot of fun with recipes this year, something that I hope to do even more of in 2016. Stir fry for example.

We also dedicated a lot of time to watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I can firmly tell you, there are no regrets.

Though I will tell you, there was a lot of hesitancy to start a new show so soon.

In the top two exciting things to happen in 2015, my sister and now brother-in law made things official and tied the knot this past June! I, of course, made a spectacular Maid of Honor, lacking only in humility.

What a perfect day it was with the weather, love, happiness, family, and friends!

Another of the top two most exciting things to happen to me, was when I decided to take a chance and make a change when it came to my professional life. Work is a huge part of how we live, love it, hate it, or grudgingly accept it, so we should make it count. I was miserable where I was and I was scared to move forward, but with a lot of support and a moment of blind courageousness, I took a chance. To get to work where I do now, with the people I’m working beside, and feeling as though I have a purpose, that is a blessing.

This all led to a significant moment in my life that has been building for the past four years when I finally woke up and realized I needed to take responsibility for my life and choices. As an early Christmas present, I took and passed the test that marks me a certified Personal Trainer and I am so so excited to finally get started.

2015 was a year with up’s and down’s and I’m very much choosing to reflect on all of the good in this post. I probably haven’t even gotten too deep into what this year offered me, but I’m so happy to have taken the time and opportunity to delve into it a bit so that I can truly leave 2015 feeling as though I lived through it with purpose, pleasure, and effort.

Take a minute of your day to do the same with your’s.

My New Toothbrush is…Overachieving

That title might be giving my toothbrush too much credit. Aggressive might be a better term for it. I asked for a new, highly effective one for Christmas because I wanted to step up my dental game, but Santa went big. I just used it for the first time and it vibrated my entire body. My feet were shaking and I felt a little dizzy. This could also be in connection to a caffeinated mint I had earlier on in the evening. Time will tell. So long as that toothbrush does it job, I didn’t hate it.

In other strange news, I noticed a leftover piece of broccoli stranded on my mom’s dinner napkin. When I questioned her about it, she said she was just “too full.”

I think sometimes people need to just stuff it in there. I mean, it’s broccoli. I’m fairly certain we’d all make that sacrifice had it been a bite of cookie.

Also, apparently people eat chicken wings on the way into the gym and drop the leftover bones in the recycle bin. It’s just something you notice working there.

Food today was pretty casual. For breakfast, I had scrambled eggs, toast, and a banana that was slightly rushed thanks to the SNOW covering the ground and the need to clear it off my car before work.

My pre-workout snack was a peanut butter roll-up, followed up with a lunch of leftovers and a hunk of a salad that I couldn’t finish.

After my second shift at work, I came home to turkey meat that I sprinkled with cheese, rice, and the aforementioned broccoli that I somehow managed to finish.

I’m proud of myself because I only ate two leftover Christmas treats today and they were fairly small. To be fair, we can’t say I exerted a large amount of control because I was at the gym for the majority of the day, working or exercising, and was not in any proximity to temptation. (Except perhaps…chicken wings??)

Speaking of exercise, my strength circuits consisted of biceps, chest, back, and core. For a quick cardio/plyometric circuit, I did a burpee-to-box-jump combination that was killer. I mean, kill-er. I followed those bad boys up with some rope swinging (this is probably not the term) and single-leg jumps. To complete my workout for the day, I finished up on the elliptical for a good 15 minutes and came home to, ugh, shovel. I felt the shoveling in my core though. We need to find the positives in all things bleak as we head into the crush of winter.

This week, I still have a Star Wars thoughts post to share, my New Years resolutions and end-of-the-year thoughts, and the usual meals, workouts, and silly stories.

The Thong Song

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and are still feeling good vibes heading into the new year. I for one had a wonderful time, but I’m ready to get back into the groove of solid routine, especially in terms of food. Too many tempting sweets!

Let’s get right back into it!

Yesterday, after Yoga and a brief, but sweaty run, my friend Katie came over for brunch. I’m always saying I make better breakfast/brunch than restaurants, so I needed to prove myself. A ham and cheese omelet, toast, and a side of spinach and peppers was a solid force.

I worked for much of the day, so lunch was a quick bite of leftovers and dinner was Chinese food while watching the first Star Wars with my family. Side note, there is this game Fibbage you play on your phones and over some kind of video game device and it’s hilarious. I recommend it for New Years’ shenanigans.

This morning, I made myself a warm bowl of oats. Haven’t had this one in awhile! I was missing the mashed banana as grocery shopping still needed to be done, but it was an excellent breakfast.

After a short shift at work, I fit in a workout with my friend Nouha. The focus was on triceps, shoulders, and legs, followed up with some core. We ran out of time on the cardio front, but it was still a good sweat!

My post-workout lunch included eggs, toast, veggies, and fruit.

I really am on a huge egg kick lately, but I’m trying to back off on those waffles! Can’t go wrong with eggs breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Some random things to note.

I forgot how comfortable boots are! They’re like cushions for my feet. I’m not pleased that the reason I pulled them out of the closet was due to a pending snow-something (I won’t say storm), but my feet are happy in their ignorant bliss.

In an this-would-happen-to-me-scenario, a few days ago, Facebook wanted me to share a “special memory” that occurred 8 years ago. I don’t know why they thought this one should be re-posted, especially because they only prompt such a thing once every few weeks, but I had to screenshot it and share the oddness.

That is a thong…lying on the ground at a tourist site in some European country my sister visited 8 years ago and I tagged myself in to be funny. I really hope someone took the time to do this, but it’s probably just the computer being random. (OR, computers are gaining senses of humor/irony, which means we’re all pretty much screwed.

Anyone else have the Thong Song stuck in their heads now?

I’ve Got News!

I know, I know I’ve been away for far too long, but it was grind time for study time. No fear, it all paid off and now I am proud to say I’m officially an NASM-certified personal trainer.

No idea where those past six months went, from deciding to leave my previous job, buying my study package and all that of studying , but it all came to a head starting last night as I finally memorized the muscles and didn’t sleep- too much nervous energy!

I’m so glad I took my test early this morning. Throughout the entire thing, I was shaking and super nervous, and apparently sweating to excess, but I kept a steady breath and took my time.

Now that I’ve got my cert, I’m excited to get started and really get a handle on this career. Promise blogging will once again be a part of that!

Coming soon: my Star Wars reaction. I will mark it will spoiler alerts, I promise!

Lately and Onward

Hi, everyone! I’ve been on the DL lately thanks to all the studying I’ve been doing. As I mentioned, it’s crunch time and I’m following a strict plan I’ve laid out for myself. The good news, I’m not just flipping through, but clarifying points I was confused on and I feel like I’m making actual progress. Here we go!

Things of late, we have mostly breakfasts.

Scrambled eggs, waffles, fruit. I think I actually might be off my waffle kick now.

Fancy pancakes. I tried to do a design, but then I plopped the pancakes down on top of it and the fruit smeared.

More scrambled eggs, fruit, and toast.

Exercise-wise, I’ve done my usual strength training with bouts of cardio. Monday included triceps, chest, legs, and core with a few intervals on the bike thanks to a sore hamstring/glute. Thanks to the foam roller, or self-myofascial release if you want to be technical, it’s been feeling a lot better. Tuesday was biceps, shoulders, back, and core followed up with a sweaty walk/run/sprint cardio session on the treadmill that stretched out my sore spots. Stair climbing was really the pain-riddled issue. Wednesday was a rest day so that things could return to normal.

I leave you all with this link to my cousin Erin’s blog: https://queenbucks.wordpress.com.

One of us writes about food and exercise and the other is all about fashion and beauty. I’ll let you guess which is which.

I even dressed myself.

(Reminder: this is from yesterday when I was in serious study mode and had no reason to leave the house until work much later on and in a completely different outfit. Don’t judge me!)

Holidays Are Kinda Cool

Popping in with small reminders of why the holiday- and I mean all holidays- season is so important and special. While at work tonight, two very cool things happened, which also goes to show how cool it can be to work in customer service.

  1. Someone came in and was so excited to see a menorah on the front desk. She said it was “super cool” and her face lit up, knowing that we represented and celebrated all holidays. It made me realize how special those little moments can be.
  2. My co-worker and I were serenaded by a little girl who sang every single line of “Frosty the Snowman” with perfect clarity. I haven’t wanted to laugh and cry simultaneously in the best of ways in a long time.

This time is a busy one. I was just texting my friend about how crazy and hectic things can get this time of year, trying to shop and studying on top of everything. But it’s vital that we pause and take in all the celebrations that come along with it. And if that means I need to listen to Feliz Navidad play on repeat on the radio all season long, I’ll take the good with the bad.

In Which I Adult

Monday is upon us. Does it always kind of feel like a Monday to you too? Regardless of if we want it, it comes and so we must deal. At least we have the previous weekend’s memories to discuss and the next weekend’s possible adventures to dream about to hold us over. Or, we could just live in the moment. Right?

We left off on Friday evening. I worked and then came home to make breakfast for dinner. A cheesy omelet with a side of waffles and spinach and peppers made all my dreams come true.

It was an early night as I was up early on Saturday morning for work. Breakfast was very similar, except the eggs were scrambled and I had a berry bowl instead of veggies.

For my Saturday workout, I went through a series of circuits- biceps, shoulders, back, and core- then took it back home to go for a run. I ran 2 miles at a steady pace then finished with some sprints.

Dinner was a strange concoction of pasta, leftover turkey (not from Thanksgiving for the record, but from turkey taco day), and a hunk of a salad. I ate everything as I got them ready so there was not one cohesive plate of which to get a picture.

As I made flashcards- lots and lots and lots of flashcards, my right hand is ACHING- I flipped on The Devil Wears Prada and then found a Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon that I had to switch off so I could watch some study videos. I am adulting!

3 days worth of flashcards, my friends.

I was up semi-earlyish again on Sunday for a Yoga class. Every Sunday should start with Yoga. It’s a great workout, stretches you out, and relaxes you. That’s a win-win-win!

More flashcard making and studying was had. I skipped over to my sister and brother-in-law’s house to watch some House Hunters, while making flashcards, before we met up with some other fine folks for dinner. This included a Christmas Cosmo that got me in the spirit of Christmas.

Now onto a workout, more studying- yes, more flashcards-and work. Happy Monday! It’s grind time.
